Description

"In the spiritual vacuum of our post-christian west, new mythologies continually arise. The sources of much religious speculation, however, may be surprising. Author James Herrick directs our attention to a wide range of scientists, filmmakers, science fiction writers and religious philosophers and discovers there the role that science and science fiction have played in such mythmaking."--BOOK JACKET.

It is unfortunate that some authors don't put the time and research needed in writing a book. This could have been an excellent Christian analysis of the worldview from science fiction. Unfortunately, the author tries to analyze science fiction, the rise of science and, at the same time, tries to

convince you that they have it all wrong. His analysis comes very close to being a semi-Luddite fundamentalist tract. His train of thought is choppy and he tends to be short on explanation. He really attempts to do too much in too small a space. In order to be successful he should have been more even-handed, spent more time developing his argument and analysis, and accomplished more background reading and research. In many ways the book has the feel of a freshman college research paper. The fact that the book is published under the imprint of IVP Academic, an imprint of Inter-Varsity Press, makes one wonder if IVP's standards are slipping. In the past Inter-Varsity has published a number of very well written books on Science and Christianity. This is not one of them.
