“Sir, there are four minutes-until assembly, sir'!”

In the other alcove of the room Larry Brennan and Rex Cole, in cots, one suspended above‘ the other, gave a grunt and dug in deeper under their blankets. Doug steeled himself for the moment when he must fling off the covers. Something tingled in his half-awake brain. He knew, vaguely, that this was a big day. It was a day he had looked forward to for many weeks. What could it be?

“Sir, there are three minutes until assembly, sir!”

Ah! Now he remembered. Basketball! Today was the opening game of the season. There were other things not far away, such Christmas furlough and final exams, which were the highlights for the other cadets, but for him the beginning and end of existence was centered in what happened today. He would get his chance to show what he could do in big-time basketball. In varsity basketball, on an Army team!

“Sir, there are two minutes until assembly, sir!”

Basketball! Would he, could he, do half as well as his roommate Larry had done on the gridiron the past fall? Would he even make the team? Army was supposed to have a strong team this year, with a wealth of good material left over from last season. Unconsciously, Doug’s lips closed a little tighter. He had made good teams before, in high school, and in prep before coming to West Point. Last year he’d held his own..
