...The file-closers -- cadet sergeants who marched in rear of each platoon --exhorted the plebes in muffled whispers to try to march like upperclassmen for once. The first platoon swung along in faultless line past Visitors’ Row. Larry’s mind, however, was on the practice field where he had labored each afternoon for the past month. Today was to have seen the last scrimmage before the opening game. Now there was the game tomorrow, and it was rumored that the coach was going to give each prospective back a chance to show his stuff. Larry’s heart jumped at the thought of it, even as his platoon snapped their eyes to the right as they swung past the reviewing stand. Perhaps tomorrow his dream of years would be realized. Perhaps he would be a full-fledged back on an Army team.

And he had worked for it! As a star triple-threat man in prep school, he had worked with this end in view. On the Army plebe team last year, he had played a hard, smashing, brilliant game, and had labored conscientiously and courageously to prepare himself for the day when he should wear the black and gold and gray of the Army varsity on the gridiron. The platoon executed a “right by squads,” and in column of squads marched off the Plain and toward barracks to be dismissed. Larry’s mind was still on his football prospects. There was one thing that disturbed him. Last year’s backfield was intact. If he made a berth, he must displace one of the regulars. He must displace the weakest of the regulars. In his mind, at least, there was no doubt as to who was the weakest...
