The Wide, Wide World

by Susan Warner

Hardcover, 1852

Brief description:

The Wide, Wide World by Susan Warner is a sentimental work about the life of young Ellen Montgomery. The story begins with Ellen's happy life being disrupted by the fact that her mother is very ill and her father must take her to Europe, requiring Ellen to leave home to live with an almost-unknown aunt. Very popular American novel in the mid 19th century.

From 1837 til the beginning the 19th century, Susan and Sister Anna lived on a farm on Constitution Island across the Hudson from West Point. They were quite religious, published many books, and frequently invited West Point Cadets to prayer meetings and relax away from their post on a Sunday afternoon. Both sisters are buried in the West Point cemetery. Their home is preserved and may be visited by taking a boat from the dock at West Point.
