His Sombre Rivals

by Edward Payson Roe

Hardcover, 1883

Brief description:

E. P. Roe was a man of the cloth and a horticulturist, living after the Civil War in Highland Falls and Cornwall NY. He authored more than a dozen novels which were quite popular in the 1880's.

This novel is a romance that embraces the Civil War, reflecting the author's services as a chaplain to Union forces in Virginia. The protaganist Alford Graham, who is capable of deep emotion beneath his analytical exterior, falls in love with Grace. But unknown to himself, Grace has already given her heart to his best friend, Warren Hilland. Then the Civil War disrupts their lives.

The author's balanced view of the North vs. the South was his actual contemporary view of the Civil War. He doesn't unfairly portray either side and some honorable characters are Southern, though the protagonists are mostly Northern. There are several extended descriptions of battles fought with horses and muskets, but this book is by no means violent. One thing I found unexpectedly relevant for today was conversations between characters who are aghast that large numbers of people are being swayed by the extreme speech and distorted views of politicians and newspapers who purposefully mislead and divide.
