Martha's Easter Bonnet

Hardcover, 1977

Brief description:

From the dust jacket:

Easter, April 20, 1783, marked the first complete day of a general cease fire between British and American forces in America’s eight year War of In-
dependence.

A weary commander, General George Washington, welcomed the end
of the fighting but saw its bringing new concern to his still ragged, hungry, unpaid army now in its final winter quarters at New Windsor, near West Point, New York.

That morning he visited the army to measure again its temper should long overdue promises by Congress not materialize. Martha Washington sensed his deep concern and, like his soldiers and the mountain people near their camp, found a way to assure him that all would yet be well with the infant nation.

The things General Washington determined from his army and from his lady that day are of significance to Americans nearing the Bicentennial of that Easter morning.
