A Broken Sword - A Tale of the Civil War

by Charles King

Hardcover, 1905

Brief description:

The first half of Broken Sword is set in NYC in 1861. The story focuses on the division of sympathies North and South among the cities well-to-do. The wealthy Rutherfords support the North but are anguished by the death of their older son in a duel over honor with Union Major Holt before the war. Lurking around seeking the favor of young Lucy Rutherford is Major Wallis, a politically connected infantry officer of the 7th NY Regiment, aka the "Silver Spoons". He has many southerners in this coterie of friends including his brother, a Confederate officer. His allegiance to the Union cause is often questioned. Wallis is an impeccably comported, excellent officer, but with and arrogant attitude and a glib tongue for explaining away questions about his loyalties. The conflicts and questions expand as the war reaches into 1864 - 65.
