"The File Boner"

by Lt. John T. Hoppper

Pulp Fiction, April 10, 1937

Brief description:

A File Boner, in case you didn’t know, is a Greasy Grind in a cadet’s uniform.”

Binker was awakened by sounds of movement in the next alcove. He raised himself on one elbow in his upper bunk and listened, trying to determine what was going on. He decided finally that it must be John Davis. Binker looked at the windows. Outside it was still completely dark. Blinker’s ire rose. What in the dickens was Davis doing, moving around, waking people up before reveille?

"Hey, Davis!" he called in a low voice, in order not to wake Bill Treadway, who was still asleep in the bunk directly beneath Binker’s. "What're you doing? What time is it?"

"It's pretty near time for reveille," came a low answer from beyond the partition between the two alcoves. "I'm making up my bed."

"Say!" broke in Bill Treadway sleepily. "Why don't you guys go and debate someplace else?"

"The file boner," said Binker bitterly, "is at it again. He's making his bed before reveille."

"Well, I won't have time to make it after reveille," John Davis snapped back.
Just as Davis finished speaking, enthusiastic bursts of noise were un leashed upon the United States Corps of Cadets in their beds. Bells clamored in every hall of barracks. Drums beat and bugles blared. First call for reveille. The day had officially begun at the United States Military Academy at West Point.
