Cute wordless picture book about a cat who helps a bird find his flock after they fly south for the winter. I really enjoy McDonnell's comic strip Mutts, and this was a cute addition to it. The pictures were very expressive and it would be an easy story for parents and children to make up words for

A lost bird needs help, and he will get it from an unlikely hero.

This is a book with no words. The author uses only pictures to tell the story. That is what I like so much about this story. It gives the reader a chance to use their imagination and create their own words. The story is about a lost bird and a cat who helps the bird find his way back to his flock.

Patrick McDonnell's South is a sweet, delightfully uncluttered, charming wordless picture book about a cat who helps a lost little bird find its travel companions (the bird had fallen asleep and missed the beginning of the Fall migration to the south, hence the title). I love this story because it

tells a wonderful tale of an unusual friendship, using very simple, easy to understand illustrations. And although the illustrations are not exactly the kind I usually like, they work very well in this delightful little gem of a story. This book would be wonderful for sharing with any child who likes to read or hear stories about animals (or friendship), and is simple enough for even very young children to enjoy on their own, a definite winner. I really enjoyed this almost-wordless book. The illustrations fit the story well, giving the reader a chance to fill in the words mentally. The transition from fall to winter was well done. Nice story.

This almost wordless story with simple drawings will reassure the youngest readers, for whom home and a loving family are the most important things of all. So sweet, compassionate and simple, it got me misty-eyed.
