I liked how this book did not sugar coat the struggles of Allison, even at a very young age, to find her sense of belonging in her adopted family and the rejection she feels from her birth family. The connection between Allison and their adopted stray cat help her to understand her adopted family

better.

This book can be used in curriculum that discusses different family structures. Then the children can draw a family tree.

much. After struggling with the idea that she was unwanted, Allison comes to terms with the fact that her parents love her, and want her.

This was a very touching story. I think it would be a good story for children who have been adopted.

This would be a good book to use along with other books on how different families are made up.

"Allison" strikes a sensitive chord with his telling of a young girl struggling for identity. As the artwork is on par with his other works, Say captures the sadness and joy of the protagonist through her artistically detailed eyes. Even without the text, the emotions associated with this strongly toned tale are encapsulated through Say's meticulous attention to the windows of the soul.

along and she found comfort in this cat. She asked her parents if she could keep the cat and they let her. She decides sometimes we can be brought together to form a family even if we were not born into the family.

Personal Reaction: Very good book. This book would definitely help a child or family who may be going through this same thing. This shows what a family is really made of.

Classroom Extension:
1.) The children can talk about the different things that make a family even if someone was not born into the family.
2.) The children could color a cat the way their cat would look if they got to choose one. Also list the characteristics of their perfect cat.

Good story which adds some insight into what some adopted children go through. Lovely illustrations from Allen Say, as usual.
