Description
While testing an experimental spacecraft Reed Richards, Ben Grimm, and Sue and Johnny Storm were exposed to a bombardment of mysterious cosmic rays. Upon their return to Earth, they found that they had gained wondrous abilities, the likes of which had never been seen before. That voyage was the first of many extraordinary adventures for these friends, who became known to the world as: Mr. Fantastic, The Thing, The Human Torch, and The Invisible Girl - The Fantastic Four!.

The Marvel Age Of Comics started here. Instructed by his publisher to create a superhero team to compete with DC's Justice League Of America, Stan Lee, on the verge of quitting the comics biz for good, decides he has nothing to lose by creating a superhero team that broke the mould: an egghead
No secret identities or hideout for the FF; everyone knew who they were and their headquarters was a skyscraper in NYC (called Central City in the first issue) with their logo emblazoned on the side.
The first 10 issues reprinted in this volume are classics thanks to the imagination of Lee and his collaborator, the legendary Jack Kirby, to many the true creative force behind the rise of Marvel Comics.
Among the baddies introduced (or reintroduced) in these 10 comics are some of the biggies: the shapeshifting Skrulls, The Sub-Mariner, Dr Doom and the Puppet-Master. Described on the cover of issue 4 onwards as 'The World's Greatest Comic Magazine", it would not truly reach that status for another 3 years but all the ground work is laid here.

human-level problems to complement the superhuman-level villains. Lee and Kirby sow the seeds of the love triangle between Reed Richards, Sue Storm, and Namor. He establishes the friendly rivalry between Torch and the Thing. They add the blind Alicia Masters to the mix, who can “see” behind the Thing’s rough exterior. And they start creating all the fantastic gadgets that made the Four as much a science fiction comic as a superhero one: flying cars, pogo planes, exploring other dimensions. The stories are still just one offs per magazine, with the monthly villain dispatched by the last page, instead of the multi-part serials we’ve come to expect today, but the recurrence of both Namor and Doctor Doom presages the future. Still likely only of interest to completists or those interested in the rough beginnings of these characters. Show Less
