Sarah Montgomery's life will never be the same. Her fiancé, Rand Campbell, was killed in the war (or so she thought). She smiles and goes about her daily life but her heart is empty and so is her faith. Her father is dying and requests that she marry Ben Croftner because he would like to see her

settled before he dies. Sarah thinks Ben is handsome but he's not Rand. After much contemplation, she agrees to marry Ben to please her father. Ben thinks he's won and he will finally have Sarah for his own. But Ben knows something Sarah and the rest of the town folks don’t. What will happen when the supposedly dead Rand shows up very much alive?

This was a good start to what will be a serial series of six installments. It's an updated version of her earlier work. This story takes place in Wabash, Indiana just after the civil war. You'll find within its pages, love, loss, betrayal and even danger. You get a feel for what it must have been like being home and thinking you've lost a loved one but not really knowing for sure. How do you move forward? Poor Rand didn't know what he was going to find when he finally returned home and then he finds out he was betrayed by a friend. I will say, that I felt like some of Rand’s reaction toward Sarah was a little too strong and just didn't seem to fit with my perception of him. A Heart's Disguise is only a little over a hundred pages so it's a quick read but it does make you want to grab the next installment right away to find out what happens next.

Colleen Coble’s A Heart’s Disguise is the first installment in a 6-part serialized novel. Originally published years ago, the series is being offered after ten years of being out-of-print. Filled with what fans of Coble have come to expect — well-researched historical details, well-developed

characters and a decidedly romantic thread, A Heart’s Disguise is a quick read sure to whet your appetite for more.

Sarah Montgomery has been mourning her fiance’s death since the end of the Civil War 5 moths before. Determined to please her family, she agrees to marry another, although she does not love him. But Ben holds some deep secrets and conceals a heart full of menace.

A Heart’s Disguise is the perfect read for those looking for a well-written historical romance. At just 90 pages, it is indeed a very quick read. And because this collection is serialized, you have a definite to be continued ending. But this 6-part series will have one installment released per month, so book 2, A Heart’s Obsession, will be released shortly. If you have a hard time waiting, you can always buy all six when the last is released. (There will be a full 6 book Kindle version available in September.) But I dare you to wait! I am reviewing all 6 books as they are released — cannot wait to find out just what happens!

With sweet romance, dastardly villains and a spirit of adventure, A Heart’s Disguise is a recommended read.

Recommended.

Audience: older teens to adults.

Can you imagine living though the Civil War and learning that your fiancé is dead, never to return. This is what happened to Sarah Montgomery, and she may never get over her loss. Life must go on, and her father is not about to live much longer, she lives with her brother and his wife, and they

all want her to marry a well to do survivor of the horrible war.
Ben Croftner appears to be a man that gets what he wants and no one had better to get in his way. This is the man her family wants her to marry, and why not she is not happy and life has been so hard since she lost her Rand.
Can you imagine the surprise when Rand reappears and is shocked to find out that Sarah has not waited for him? He thought she loved him, as he still loves her, but now she is engaged to marry Ben? He knows that Ben knew he was alive, so how could this be possible. He had even sent a letter with Ben to give to Sarah. Um, I bet you can guess that Ben is not a very nice man, and he goes on to prove it again, and again, the deeper we get into the book.
With the end of this page-turning book we are left up in the air, and I need to know what is going to happen. Rand is on his way to report to Fort Laramie, and he is alone.
Thank goodness there is more to come, and I can hardly wait for answers. Thank you Colleen Coble, I love this story!

My review:
This six-part novella series is a reissue of the Wyoming series, earlier works by Colleen Coble ~ Where Leads the Heart and continuing Plains of Promise, to be enjoyed by new readers and renewed by those who read them when they were first published almost a decade ago. The story begins just after the end of the Civil War in the United States, 1861-1865. The War Between the States left behind lost loved ones and the hopeful expectations of those remaining at home resurfacing. Sarah Montgomery is awaiting news of her beloved Rand Campbell from those returning home. She has not received letters from him and holds on to hope she will receive some word.

Wabash, Indiana, 1865
Autumn's chill matched Sarah Montgomery's heart. The war had taken so much from her, and it seemed impossible for life to ever get to a hopeful place. The scent of turning leaves lingered in the air as she sat on a porch rocking chair beside her father, who was huddled in a blanket...
--A Heart's Disguise, 1

Papa is dying. So much had transpired, so many memories holding her hopes at bay. But how is it possible to keep your private thoughts hidden away from your countenance? Five months it has been now since Ben came home, declaring that Rand is dead. Dead? How can it be? Papa says to marry Ben; to be taken care of, she and her eight-year-old brother, Joel. She has raised him since infancy when Mama died when he was born. Wade agrees. It's for the best. But whose best, I wonder?

Have you made a life decision to please someone else or been unable to back down once you had spoken it? Sarah regrets pleasing others before she is certain. Her older brother Wade is like the prodigal son remaining at home ~ all of it his, but bitterness dwells in his heart.

So, I have agreed to marry Ben, but my heart belongs with Rand. Dying moment-by-moment, my days go by in a blur. Soon we are to wed. How do I leave my heart behind?

The train comes to a stop at the Wabash depot. A lone figure descends the steep steps, greeted by the old porter, Liam Murphy. Home. Finally home after three long years.

I know the plans that I have for you, declares the LORD. They are plans for peace and not disaster, plans to give you a future filled with hope.
--Jeremiah 29:11, God's Word®

How will Sarah discover hopes renewed? (to be continued in next month's issue...)

What will Sarah decide to do. Sarah will need to take her younger brother Joel. It depends on what Sarah wants to do. Will she leave her father and go with Rand? What will Ben do or plan for that matter. It sure is mystery.

My rating is 5 out of 5 stars.
Rand Campbell is a Union soldier who was captured behind enemy lines and taken to Andersonville Prison Camp where he almost died from starvation and
Show More
dysentery. His best friend, Ben, was one of the Union soldiers who liberate the camp upon the end of the War Between the States. Rand entrusts him with a letter to his fiancée, Sarah. Rand continues to heal. He writes letters to his family and Sarah but never receives any letters in return. He thought for sure someone from his family would come to visit him as he recuperates but no one appears. He is finally well enough to travel home and is determined to discover what is going on.
Sarah Montgomery is a young, 16-year-old when the love of her life, Rand, leaves to serve in the Union Army. Three years later, her heart is broken as she has been told that Rand didn’t survive the war. Her father has a bad heart and has been given a year or less to live. Her older brother, who she lives with, is an arrogant bully. She is depressed and angry with God. Rand’s best friend has been pressuring her to marry him, but Sarah has put him off in the past because her heart will always belong to Rand. However, since her father is dying, he wants her married before he dies. She doesn’t love Ben, but he could give her a good life. It would make her father and brother happy, so she finally agrees. Before the wedding takes place, however, Sara and Ben are in for a big surprise.
This is a great start to this 6-part series! I was drawn into the story immediately and couldn’t put the book down until finished. I have part two on the top of my TBR pile and can’t wait to get to it! The characters are easy to get to know and become involved with. Rand, who has endured the horrific trials of the Andersonville Prison Camp, has continued to lean on the Lord for survival. However, Sara has been struggling with her faith and blames God for her grief and heartache. What will happen in the future for these two lovebirds?
