Nikki is trying to prove that she can handle being a private investigator and goes to New Orleans to try to join her cousin in his practice. Her cousin has just taken on a job defending his friend Hunter against murder. When something happens to prevent her cousin from continuing the job, Nikki
I liked seeing how Nikki worked to prove herself no matter what came her way and how she was able to get out of the predicaments that seemed to keep coming her way. She was able to deal with whatever was thrown her way and came out on top.

She finds herself not only having to contend with working around with whoever is trying to frame Hunter, but finds herself on the wrong side of one of Hunter's friends. As time progresses, Nikki finds herself more drawn to Hunter, but realizes that she is nowhere near in his league.I liked seeing how Nikki worked to prove herself no matter what came her way and how she was able to get out of the predicaments that seemed to keep coming her way. She was able to deal with whatever was thrown her way and came out on top.

As the story opens Hunter is having a good time celebrating his mothers birthday with the rest of their family and friends. Then he started receiving calls from his prater, but unfortunately as they are at sea, his cell phone reception is horrible and he is unable to hear half of the conversation.
To me, I wasn't sure if the story was meant to be a love story or a mystery as it seemed to me there was more time spent developing Hunters' personal relationship as opposed to solving the mystery itself. I thought we should see less of Hunter taking in the sights and more to the mystery. Just who was James the murder victim? How did he approach the victims? How did he know the people in the first place? Another problem I had was one of the best characters, Nate, was removed for most of the story. I thought he could have added much more to the story had this character been utilized.

Hunter decided to leave and find out what he wants only to enter his office to find that James has been murdered. Hunter soon comes to realise that he is the number one suspect in the case and after looking into his business affairs, it's not hard for him to see why. Hunter is the number one suspect, but Nicki knows Hunter is innocent. Hunter researches his partner’s financial records and business dealings, finding out things about his friend he never thought possible. Hunter also is coerced into an engagement with his girlfriend that he is not quite ready for, but doesn’t want her to be embarrassed so he agrees. However, something doesn’t sit right with him. He has spent a lot of time with Nicki and wants to spend more time with her. He doesn’t care whether she is rich or poor. His current fiancée is very focused on money and her style of living in society. Is she really the right woman for him?
The story has a good plot and enough action to keep readers interested from beginning to end. I really liked the character of Nicki. She says what she is thinking without sugarcoating things. She is honest, a hard worker, goes the extra mile and is God-fearing. Nicki also has a great sense of humor and has no illusions about where she is from and who she is. Her trust lies with the Lord. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series. This is a book that is easy to read and one that will entertain.

Review: Great start to a new series!!! Doesn't take to long to get into the murder. It made me think that about coming upon something illegal and even though you report it does no mean that person doesn't get pegged for it. I really enjoyed Nikki and some of the other underlying events that were going on. For me that kept the suspense going without it being too intense. I always like to be kept waiting for the who did it and this one did not disappoint. I really am hooked on this series. Looking forward to finishing the second book and to start the third book!!!

My book club, By The Book, loves a good mystery, and Midnight on The Mississippi by Mary Ellis provided just that. We loved the characters, the setting and the twisting plot. It also produced some very lively conversation and a desire to take a book field trip. All around, this book gets a thumbs

Let me say first that we loved, loved, loved the setting. New Orleans is one of my favorite places to visit and Ellis did a good job of bringing it and its environs to life. Her characters were fun, with many endearing and more that we loved to hate. The plot was a bit predictable and in some cases stretched credibility, but we decided to suspend disbelief and join in the fun.
There was only one thing that I took issue with. Nicki is a Mississippi girl and is often referred to by the author as a “delta” girl. Um, no. Nicki was from Natchez; the Delta (notice the capitalization) is located in the north western part of the state. It’s own distinctive region, the Delta has a rich culture and heritage, as rich as its black earth. While this discrepancy was a bit of an irritant for me, I decided to over look it. Regional details are difficult to get 100% right when you are not from the area. And if you are wondering how I know about such things, I lived in Mississippi for 8 years, married a Mississippi boy and had a true Delta Girl as a college roommate.
Minor issues aside, we loved this novel and will be reading book #2, What Happened on Beale Street, in 2017. We give it a highly recommended rating.

with murdering his partner and doesn't want Nicki in the way. Nicki is attracted to said accused murderer, Hunter Galen and ready to ply her trade of investigating. Hunter is not just a privileged society boy, he is a hard working, hard playing high powered stock trader that loves the risk, and it doesn't hurt that he is as handsome as sin in the Big Easy. He is prime suspect number one in the murder of his crooked partner. He also has a spoiled society almost fiancee. The dance of attraction and love between Hunter and Nicki begins. It is will not be without twists and turns, then more turns, nor is it a smooth ride, mysteries, murders new and old, blackmail, vengeful almost fiancees, and the games people play. We watch Hunter learn to see the world through Nicki's eyes and Nicki learns to let go of old preconceived notions about the wealthy as she sees Hunter's world thru the good he does with his wealth. This is a fast paced story, which does not lag for the reader, and the plots keep coming, it will hold your interest to the last page. I didn't want to put it down; I just had to know whom, what and when.I recommend this book to anyone that loves a good clean Christian love story with a strong hero and heroine.
