"Angel Whittaker earned his scars the hard way, but the scars that can't be seen are the ones that haunt him the most. Since he moved to Fool's Gold, California, he's cobbled together a life for himself as a bodyguard trainer. If he's not exactly happy, at least his heart is safe. Working with pro-football superstars taught tough-talking PR woman Taryn Crawford one thing--she can go toe to toe with any man. I love the Fool's Gold series of books. The characters are interesting and so different. There is such a community with old familiar characters. There were a variety of new characters that still your heart. It is full of relationships with the characters. I did not put the book down till I
Show More
had finished reading it.

There are a few love scenes that I skipped over. Another part of the book is the break up and party after. This time their is a different party twist on it.

We learn a lot about Scores in this book. Taryn is partners with three ex football players. She is the creative force of the team. They are moved into town now. Jack, Sam and Kenny are rich former pro-football players. The four of them are like family.

Angel is the last unattached member of the bodyguard school. He is a widower. Has no plans to get married again. He is really attracted to Taryn and lets her know up front.

The Acorns are loveable and scare Angel when he finds out what they really are. Taryn strikes a deal she will help him if he will help her to get ready for a client she has.

I like how Angel wants to do service and give back to the town. He is a good roll model.
I also like how Taryn sees a need and tries to help with friends she comes up with a good idea that helps the person she was targeting but also helped a lot of others in the process.

While Angel and Taryn's romance is the main characters of the story it is so much more. I love how all the characters are part of the story and we get to see so much about the characters in their lives.

This book has a lot of charm, humor and is very entertaining. There is drama and action with romance on top of it.
I will keep reading Fool' Gold books in the future.

I was given this ebook to read for purpose of giving a honest review of it by Netgalley and Harlequin.

I have absolutely no idea how I've gone this far in life without having read a book by Susan Mallery, really. I'm very glad that I decided to try out this series, but deeply disappointed in myself that I've waited this long. But man, what a man to pick for my first! Angel was everything I love in a
Show More
book boyfriend. He was tall, dark, sexy and had the capacity to love strong and with his whole heart. I really think one of my favorite scenes was the first FWM meeting. As strong and manly as he was being in a room with eight little seven year olds had him scared as can be. I loved it! Taryn was just as strong, but in a completely different way that just suited Angel to a tee. The only problem I had with her is I got a little tired of the name dropping of designers. Other then that I loved her. I'm so looking forward to reading more in this series both new books and the ones already out. In other words, I've got a lot of catching up to do and a ton of people to meet in Fool's Gold! Would definitely recommend this book.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Angel Whittaker earned his scars the hard way, but the scars that can’t be seen are the ones that haunt him the most. Since he moved to Fool’s Gold, California, he's cobbled together a life for himself as a bodyguard trainer. If he’s not

exactly happy, at least his heart is safe.

Working with pro-football superstars taught tough-talking PR woman Taryn Crawford one thing—she can go toe to toe with any man. But then dark, dangerous former Special Ops Angel targets her for seduction…and challenges her to resist his tempting kisses.

Even in four-inch heels, Taryn never backs down. Unless, somehow, Angel can convince her that surrender might feel even better than victory.

MY REVIEW:

Oh this was a great addition to the Fool’s Gold Series. I caught on to this series from a previous ARC where I was introduced to Taryn, and I gotta say, I liked her from the start. Despite working with these big, alpha males, she has this tenacious ability to keep them in line, or put them in their place—whichever comes first.

I enjoyed the easy banter between the two and thoroughly liked how they kept fighting their feelings for one another at every turn. Angel has the persistence that would have made me toss the towel in long ago, but the ever strong-headed Taryn kept going, making this book so much more exciting and her fall that much sweeter.

This book will have you laughing out loud, gripping it’s pages (or e-reader in my case), and have you up all night long turning the pages, wanting more and more and …..

Great read!

First Thought when Finished: I love revisiting Fool's Gold and When We Met by Susan Mallery was a perfect way to do it!

Story Thoughts: To be
Show More
honest, this probably falls towards the least favorite of my romances in Fool's Gold but as you can tell by my rating (3.75) that it was still good. It took a little bit to see Angel and Taryn together. However, individually I loved how both of their stories played out in the beginning. Angel with the girls and Taryn with her boys. However, once their chemistry clicked I was sold!

Character Thoughts: On the other end of the scale, as individuals Taryn and Angel were two of my favorites. I have always liked Angel. He was unique, quiet, and deadly! Taryn was ballsy, brash, and someone that was different than most of the gals in Fool's Gold. I wanted them both to be happy and in the end, I felt they were perfect for each other!

Audio Thoughts:

Narrated By Tanya Eby / Length: 8 hrs and 26 mins

I love Tanya's narration of Fool's Gold. I wouldn't just read these anymore. They are on my must get in audio list!

Final Thoughts: Can't wait until the next book!

The great thing about the Fool Gold series of books is that, even if you have read all of the books in the series, or this is your first one, you get drawn into the story and it is engaging and enjoyable from beginning to end. What a wonderful continuation and I cannot wait for the next book. This

Angel, former military special ops and bodyguard, is now working at the CDS - aka the "bodyguard school: in town. PR woman, Taryn, catches his eye - and he seduces her unlike any other man she's known. He definitely doesn't play by any rules….except his own!

Another really fun trip to Fool's Gold. This time we see Angel and Taryn, both of whom are fairly new to town. Angel and his friends have set up at bodyguard school in Fool's Gold and Taryn and her friends own a PR firm. Neither one is looking for anything permanent, but the chemistry between them
Show More
has them willing to explore a little.

I loved both these characters. I've been waiting for Angel's story for awhile. I really loved getting more of his back story. Angel grew up in a small coal mining town which he left to join the military. He married young, but his wife and son died while he was deployed and he continues to feel guilty because he wasn't there to protect them. That constant pain keeps him from opening his heart to anyone else. But he does have a strong attraction to Taryn and after watching her for awhile makes his plans to seduce her. I loved the way he seemed to know her so well and what he had to do to get her attention.

Taryn is a city girl, born and bred. It wasn't her choice to move the firm to Fool's Gold and adjusting to small town life hasn't been easy. Having total strangers talking to her and knowing her business kind of freaks her out. Her father had been abusive and she learned the value of blending in early in life. She worked hard to change her life and hasn't shared her childhood with anyone. I loved her strength of character as she overcame that past to become the success she is. I really enjoyed her relationship with her three football player partners. She is great at standing up to them and dealing with their attitudes, but they are also great friends. She has noticed Angel also, and is attracted, but she does have trust issues. His methods of seduction are unique and appeal to her sense of adventure.

The connection that Taryn and Angel feel immediately is surprising to both of them. Neither one opens up about their pasts to other people, but they find it very easy to share with each other. The chemistry between them is hot, but there is also a deep friendship that develops. I loved how that friendship has them coming together in unexpected ways. Taryn is very much a city girl, a fashionista to the bone (loved the descriptions of her clothes). When work requires her to go on a camping trip, it's Angel she goes to for help in learning how to handle the great outdoors. In return, she offers to help him with his greatest challenge yet.

Angel has decided it's time to give back to his new community and Mayor Marsha gets him involved with a local youth group. He went into it expecting to deal with teen boys and was horrified to find out he was going to be a "Grove Leader" to eight seven year old girls. I loved seeing his panic as he read through the handbook to see what he was going to have to do. His relief when Taryn offered to help was obvious. The two of them made an incredible team. I loved seeing Angel's softer side come out as he dealt with all those little girls.

I loved seeing the changes that both of them went through. Taryn adjusts to the small town life and makes friends like she's never had before. Instead of holding herself apart, she starts to get involved with the people around her. I loved seeing her try to figure out how to help Bailey, and the way it showed her a new part of herself. Angel was a bit of a tough nut to crack when it came to opening himself up to love. He was still so messed up from the loss of his family that he was afraid to risk his heart again. There were scenes where he was remembering his family that were just heartbreaking and you could see why he was so cautious. The little girls had a huge part in breaking down the walls around his heart and showing him that he could love again. Taryn's complete understanding of his feelings was important to his ability to take a chance again.

Of course, in a Fool's Gold book there's always that spot where the guy freaks out and runs away from his destiny. When Taryn admits to herself that she loves Angel, and after the scare with the flood tells him so, he can't handle it. Usually we see the ladies all come together in support of the woman, with a night of booze and junk food. But Taryn is different and there is quite a fun twist on the night of support. I loved the parade with Angel and the girls and him finally seeing what was important. He did a nice bit of grovelling and I loved the help he got from the girls.

Eh. Part of my problem was this was my first Fools Gold book, so there were these crowds of characters popping up that I didn't know or care about. Some of them are clearly there as links to previous books, others I suspect are setting up future ones (Bailey is obvious), but in scene after scene
Show More
there were half a dozen names that I was expected to know and had to scrape my memory for (they were introduced in this book, but still). Then there's the fact that I don't much like either protagonist. At the beginning, they're a pair of arrogant Type-As playing power games (and she's a clothes-horse, which bores me); later on they relax and start Revealing All to each other - and I'm still bored. Way too cliche - abused child finally learning to trust, tough guy finally admitting his guilt is over the top. If I'd liked them as people to start with, I might have enjoyed the reveals, but as it was yawn. So sweet story (with one episode of utter stupidity in the middle - he'd heard of this tribe and just spent ten minutes talking about their unique aspect...but it never occurs to him that it will apply to him. Bah), uninteresting tropes, highly uninteresting characters, and despite the twined series aspect (which I usually enjoy) I'm not interested in reading any more. Not exactly sorry I read it, but a long way from a favorite. Received from Harlequin We Hear You, though as a Christmas present not (specifically) for review.

Would make a good beach read, if I was in Hawaii. Unfortunately, it's -14F outside. Not memorable, but entertaining.

The couple in this romance are both strong, independent people. They both have come through a lot. Mallery tells the tale without over playing her hand, mostly. The ending is a little too dramatic for my taste. I was really into the book until those last two chapters. I still enjoyed it a lot. I
Show More
just wish we were told a little more about how Angel got that scar. You don't have a scar like that without being deeply affected by the events that caused it.

As usual one of my favorite authors didn't let me down with a novel that satisfied me emotionally and I was intrigued with the beginning, and I can't help but wonder WHAT book 14 will be like? I liked Angel Whittaker from the start with his cockiness! I sided with Taryn Crawford as she was the

under dog as she worked PR with pro-football superstars and her toughness that would not let her back down from the meanest players, even though Angel was not into football any more but worked as a bodyguard.

With When We Met Susan Mallery whisks readers back to the charming town of Fool's Gold where Angel Whittaker and Taryn Crawford find not only love, but their places, in the close-knit community.

loving Taryn grudgingly relocates from LA to Fool's Gold. Completely out of her comfort zone amongst the happy and super friendly residents, she is starting to make friends and settle into her new life when super sexy ex-soldier and former Special Ops Angel makes his interest in her known. Neither Taryn nor Angel is looking for a long term commitment but both are more than happy to indulge in a sizzling fling.

Taryn and Angel are carrying emotional scars from their pasts. Angel is still grieving the loss of his family while Taryn's problems stem from her abusive childhood. Their relationship begins as a light-hearted, casual flirtation but there is no denying their heated attraction for one another. Angel quickly begins his slow seduction and although impatient to move things along, Taryn eagerly anticipates his unpredictable invitations.

Their casual fling is just heating up when Taryn and Angel turn to one another for help in their personal lives. Angel is out of his depth with his community service volunteer position while city girl Taryn learns she is expected to join "the boys" on a camping trip to woo a client. As they give one another a hand, Angel and Taryn begin to open up about their respective pasts. Angel easily reveals his secrets but he continues to carefully guard his heart. Taryn's trust issues run deep but she finds it easier to admit to her growing feelings.

The relationship between Taryn and Angel is based on mutual respect for one another. They are complete opposites but they appreciate their differences. Angel is rugged and outdoorsy but he finds Taryn's love of clothes and shoes sexy. Taryn might never have been in love before but she admires Angel's devotion and affection for his lost family and she always a sympathetic listener.

When We Met is another enchanting novel in Susan Mallery's Fool's Gold series. It is a sexy and playful romance between two wounded people who help one another recover from their painful pasts. Old and new fans are going to love this sweet yet saucy addition to the endearing and highly addictive series.
