together occurs as Pascoe, the king’s problem solver, is sent to deal with a mining and steel production issue in a town that Bridey used to preside over as countess, midwife and healer. Pascoe needs information but is saddled with two four year olds that keep disappearing. The two strike sparks from the beginning but Bridey’s chilly reception of Pascoe soon becomes a whole lot warmer as the story unfolds. With a ghost or two hanging around, incompetent heirs at the steel mill, unhappy workers uniting to strike, accidents occurring and two small children to sort out this is an entertaining and delightful read and a wonderful addition to the series. I am eager to read Will’s story at some point in the future and wonder how many of the Ives brood there re left and am hoping there are plenty since this is a fun historical series with a bit of magic and the paranormal in each book that I read.

Thank you to the author for the ARC – this is my honest review.

Aura of Magic: Unexpected Magic by Patricia Rice is a whimsical, and magical tale of love, mystery and so much more. Book 4 in the "Unexpected Magic" series, but can be read as a stand alone. See, "book 1, "Magic in the Stars", book 2, "Whisper of Magic" and book 3, "Theory of Magic". While, each
Show More
book is a stand alone, I feel to receive the full benefits of this wonderful series, each book should be read.

This the story of Brighid Darrow, Countess of Carstairs, now a widow of a loveless marriage, she for endured years to protect her friends and the people of Northridge. Who now shun her and accuse her of witchcraft, because she sees auras and ghosts. She also wishes to set up and begin a midwifery school for women. And, Aaron Pascoe-Ives, the illegitimate son of a marquess, who is ordered to Northridge in hopes of saving the royal mines from rioters. Pascoe, doesn't believe in magic but he himself can smell corruption and greed. He wishes to gain a knighthood and rise above his birth. This both Pascoe and Brighid are passionate and very strong-willed.
As if they didn't face enough problems enter....Pascoe's incorrigible but cute twins. Who not only endanger they their lives by following thry father to Northridge but they insist that Brighid is their new mother. Which of course dashes Pascoe's hope of receiving aid from the aloof but beautiful Brighid.

Ms. Rice has yet again written a story of not only magic but a story that will definitely have readers turning pages as they follow Pascoe, Brighid and the twins on a mystifyingly perilous and journey. They face assassins, riots, ghosts, corruption, greed, and their attraction to each other, among other things.

Poweful, compelling with mystery, susense, some hilarious moments as well as hair-raising moments. The elements of "Aura of Magic" is fantastic, and makes for a fast paced read with engaging characters and a brilliantly written plot. I think Pascoe and Brighid's story is my favorite in this fascinating series. I enjoy Patricia Rice's stories, written with a bit of humor, mystery, suspense and magical elements.

Fans of Historical romance, magic, wirh the added antics of children, twins, no less, will find "Aura of Magic" exceedingly intriguing. Well done, Patricia Rice!

I liked this one - the characters felt very solid, with solid motivations drawing them in their various directions. Pascoe's hardheadedness got a little much at times, particularly when he was smelling emotions and identifying them as such, but he wasn't totally stubborn. The twins are...not quite
Show More
amusing, since their actions tend to scare everyone a little much - but trying to get sense out of them, those scenes were quite funny. And Bridey's stubbornness is in quite another direction; what she must do, what she wants to do, what she can do that don't quite overlap. The only problem I have with this series is that _everyone_ seems to have a power, in every family that touches the Malcolm/Ives family. I'd like to see one where a love interest _doesn't_ have a power and doesn't need one to deal with their love. Enjoyable, worth reading, possibly worth rereading. Next please!

I received this book through LibraryThing's Early Reviewers program in exchange for a fair and honest review.

When I received this book, I decided to go back to the start of the series on the Malcolm women and their Ives men and have therefore thoroughly enjoyed the last week as I have reveled in
Show More
virile perfect men and witchy bewitching women. I enjoy the humour that pervades these books and the fun that the author has with her witchy premises as she intermixes them with the developing sciences of the Ives men. It is also a pleasure to read historical romances set outside the Regency and Victorian eras, especially when the author describes the clothing so well and accurately that I found myself found fact-checking the details then wondering if she had used the same websites (and yes, I am aware that not every one who reads historical romances does this!).

This latest installment in the ongoing series is particularly satisfying as it combines previous characters and their romances with Patricia Rice's trademark light affectionate touches with a nicely acerbic heroine and an urbane hero fast losing his urbanity as he faces the dilemma of prioritising his responsibilities to his family and to his country. It also develops the theme of the Malcolm witchiness and its undercurrent of valuing unique abilities in the face of scorn and disbelief. I appreciated the historical accuracy with which Bridey's healing and midwifery skills were cast against the developing fields of medicine and science and the older views of religion and superstition. Of course, all of this can be ignored in favour of a well written and thoroughly enjoyable historical romance but it is a real pleasure to have a light airy weekend read with some very interesting undercurrents which are as relevant to today's world as they were to the 1830s of this novel's setting. I look forward to the next book in this ongoing series.

I enjoyed this fourth book in the series as much as I have enjoyed the first three of them. This one was once again a great combination of romance, mystery,a little bit of fun and of course some magic. I highly recommend this series and I suggest starting at the beginning and you will not be

I love this intriguing family, the series is brilliant and captivating. This story is highly amusing. Pascoe being oblivious about his "gift", and his childrens, is cause for much entertainment. You would think that with his family it would be a no brainer. But other than that, he is smart,
Show More
charming, dedicated, determined and caring. Bridey is determined, funny and stubborn. The drama that the twins cause is unique and entertaining. The storyline is engrossing and suspenseful and the end is satisfying. Put this one on the top of your TBR list.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from LibraryThing. This is my voluntary and honest opinion of it.

This fourth title in the Unexpected Magic series continues the formula of a pragmatic realist coming to terms with the possibility of abilities that cannot be explained through logic or science. This outing brings together the king's troubleshooter Aaron Pascoe-Ives, who hopes this latest task will
Show More
bring him the respectability he desires, and Brighid Darrow, who plans to buck the traditional medical establishment by opening a training school for midwives. Brighid also possesses the ability to see auras and has been driven from home by accusations of witchcraft.

Not only does Aaron need Brighid to help him accomplish his task, but she may also assist him with corralling his wayward children, four-year old twins who insist that Brighid is to be their new mama and who Brighid insists, possess unique talents themselves.

A stubborn hero, a feisty heroine, a truly villainous foe, and impish toddlers combine to make this installment as delightful as the rest. Rice also manages to include several familiar characters from previous outings so that readers have the check in with earlier favourites. I look forward to future installments.

Generally I have liked Patricia Rice's books but I disliked this one a lot. It seemed pretty amateurish. Disliked both the hero and heroine. The writing was repetitious -- the characters kept saying the same things about themselves to themselves as a reason for them not to have a romance or later
Show More
not to get married. The first half was very slow. There were a lot of characters from other books in the series that I didn't know who were discussed or who were part of the plot and I found that confusing.

A wonderful beginning to the series. I have met Aster in other books from the series and I now love her even more. The unexpected magic series is best read in order. The additional characters are so much better this way.
