Lord Theophilus Ives, heir presumptive to the Marquess of Ashford, Earl of Ives and Wystan, is a dedicated astronomer who has perfected a telescope capable of seeing beyond Saturn's moons. Lady Aster, an astrologer and prognosticator of the future, has been creating astrological charts of family for many years. One of per predictions is that something horrible will happen in the Ives family, shirttail relatives of hers, so she sets off to warn them. They, of course, do not believe
Show More
her. Something bad does happen and she is called in to help out. There are many Ives brothers in the family with Theo, the astronomer, deciding to set his sights on Aster.

There is much to do to set Iveston to rights, many charts to consider, some stargazing through telescopes and evil to be thwarted. The evil doers may raise their heads in future books and Ives brothers will no doubt meet women and settle down in those books.

This is not an easy book to get into unless you are into astrology. The idea that Lady Aster truly believes her charts and lets them dictates her behavior is a bit mind boggling but perhaps true of the times and of her. Her family is descended from the Malcom family of a previous series and the marriage ceremony harks back to some traditions of that series. I enjoyed this book once I got into it. I loved the scenes that occurred in the bathroom and the bed set up for the wedding night. The Ives family was interesting and fun to get to know. They definitely were a handful!

There is much that can be done with this series and this book sets the groundwork for all of the brothers to end up with their own happily ever after. It will be interesting to see who each of them end up with since they are all so very different. Some of Lady Aster’s relatives were mentioned as potential wives but could also meet other than Ives brothers and have stories of their own in this series.

Thank you to the author for the ARC of this book to read and review.

I love Patricia Rice's books and this one didn't disappoint. She writes strong women as her main character regardless of the time period. I can't wait to read the next one. Bravo Ms. Rice

Magic in the Stars #1 in the "Unexpected Magic" series by Patricia Rice. Astrology and Astronomy collide. Well written with well developed characters and a unique and entertaining storyline. With bits of humor throughout, mystery, a bit of suspense, passionate drama, danger, and some laugh out loud
Show More
moments, the reader is sure to enjoy this entertaining read. History is weaved throughout, as well, the danger of finding love. Ms. Rice weaves a whimsical tale that is magical, and dangerous which together makes an enjoyable read. Fans of Fantasy and Paranormal Romance with history weaved within should enjoy this read. I can't wait to see what's next.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This story is different from any other book I've read. The Ives men are all entertaining in their own way. With their unique upbringing, and family dynamics they are a force to be reckoned with, in their own home. Aster and her
Show More
family being so superstitious is crazy. The story grabs your attention with love, laughter and curiosity, and keeps it with an interesting story. I look forward to reading about all the brothers.

Magic in the Stars: Unexpected Magic by Patricia Rice is an entertaining Romance novel. I received this as an ARC in exchange for a review. When I requested it, I expected more of a clash between science and magic. I was somewhat disappointed in not really having much of that. But taken for what it
Show More
is, it is a good story. A bit slow in the beginning, but there is decent development of the characters.

I received a copy of this book through LibraryThing Early Reviewers and this is my unbiased review.
I really enjoyed this novel. I love Regency novel, and alternative Regency novels are even more fun. Aster is an interesting character, with a lot more depth than first meets the eye. Her fears are
Show More
so ingrained in her from her being trained as the family Librarian (Astrologer, an extremely accurate one), it becomes difficult to tell if things are coincidence or real, especially when she meets the more than somewhat daunting Ives family, famous for driving away women, and the Astronomer Theo, who divulges something important in the skies that Aster has been missing that alters her charts. This is a lively, fun novel with well rounded characters. Ashford's disability is dealt with in a realistic manner, I think, which is also very nice. The background story of what is happening with the tenants and modernization is also an interesting one, and one not always mentioned in Regency novels, also a good thing. Overall, I think everything flowed together nicely, and I liked the characters and would be interested in reading more about them.

A fun story. The characters are likable and very entertaining. Aster believes that if she stays around her family, she will endanger them. So, she lives alone and only sees family once in a while and not for long periods of time. She "sees" that there will be a problem in the Ives family and she
Show More
must warn them. When she gets to the estate, she finds chaos. Theo and his family live is chaos all the time. Then this woman shows up and tells them there will be a disaster. To him it will just be one more disaster. Aster agrees to help Theo find a wife, but she has to put their home into some kind of order first. Easier said than done.

This romance explores what it means to trust and accept others, while also listening when others try to speak. I love how the story evolves and the difference one person can make in the lives of an entire family.

This was an extremely well-written and entertaining novel. I was captivated from the very beginning and loved both the story and the characters. There is a perfect blend of suspense, humor, action, and emotion. I am eager to read the rest of the series!

When I requested this book, I was expecting something different. I like romance, but I think I need to have a story that's more plot or character driven, with a side of romance, rather than romance as the main thing. I just couldn't get into this story or into the characters, so I wasn't able to
Show More
finish it. This isn't the fault of the author- the story is well written and the author clearly skilled- I'm just not the intended audience.

It's more than a battle of the sexes when the family astrologer meets the family astronomer. Aster has cut herself off from her family and any close relationships since her chart shows that it can only lead to disaster for those she cares about. Theo just wants to manufacture his new telescope and
Show More
study the skies in peace and quiet. When Aster arrives with a warning about danger to Theo's elder brother, he disregards it. When his brother suffers a terrible accident, Theo must rely on Aster to help put the house to rights and help him solve the mystery of who would want his brother harmed without falling victim to her charms. As for Aster, not only must she deal with her increasing attachment to Theo, but she also has to adjust her thinking about the influence of celestial objects as there are more planets than she supposed. I loved the idea that the discovery of our outermost planets would completely throw astrological mapping into turmoil.

The secondary characters were delightful and I look forward to reading their stories as well.

Choppy writing, sometimes annoying floppy banter, but overall very engaging.

I must begin saying I love romantic novels. Magic in the Stars is kind of a cliché of the genre.
I found it hard to read because it´s boring and everything that happens is not a surprise. No romance can be so predictable, in order to be interesting there have to be real obstacles and an
Show More
astrologer as the main character, more than that, seems an old maid with a delusional problem or paranoia.
Sorry but Jane Austen is still number 1.

Nice romance about Aster and Theo, she is an astrologer and thinks she is endangering her family. Theo is an astronomer who has to take care of his family and his family's estate. His brother has had a terrible accident. For some reason he thinks he can only do that with a wife and Aster agrees to
Show More
find a wife for him. Fill out the rest of the story yourself because it's the sort of story which anybody can write. But it was nice, Rice has a nice way of writing.

Odd. I didn't get this book through Early Reviewers - I did get books 2-5 of the series. I finally managed to find this one, and read it...and it's not nearly as good as the rest of the series. I find one of the best parts of the series the close connections between the Ives men (mostly) and the
Show More
Malcolm women - family is a major theme throughout. Here the Malcolms are depicted mostly as eccentrics (Ok, that hasn't changed much), mostly calling on one another to help with projects; and the Ives men are described, several times, as wild animals. No one did any raising, they just sort of bumbled along - and they don't talk to each other, they don't know much about each other (OK, some - Theo is always talking about his stars and telescopes, and his brothers could probably remember that's his interest. But no one knew about Jacques' ambition, until Aster mentioned it). No one seems to care about Duncan at all, aside from the work that's been dumped on them - again, it's Aster who makes Theo realize what Duncan's going through. Let's say, there seems to have been a vast deal of change in the family (families) between the first and second books, and I'm glad I read the second book first or I might not have bothered with the series at all. As it is - this book is not particularly interesting; overwhelming lust is basically the only connection between the main characters, for far too much of the book. Theo is rather one-note; Aster is too, though she expands somewhat later in the book. Quirks in human form, rather than people with quirks. I'm glad I read it (and finally found out what actually happened to Duncan), I might reread later, sometime when I have the time to read the whole series in sequence. But not a favorite.

really loved this book and would like to read the rest of the series.
I am a big fan of historical themed stories as they also act as a way of learning about history.
I loved the characters and lost myself in the story.
