Description

"This thirteenth anthology of short stories set in the beloved Valdemar universe features tales by debut and established authors and a brand-new story from Lackey herself. The Heralds of Valdemar are the kingdom's ancient order of protectors. They are drawn from all across the land, from all walks of life, and at all ages--and all are Gifted with abilities beyond those of normal men and women. They are Mindspeakers, FarSeers, Empaths, ForeSeers, Firestarters, FarSpeakers, and more. These inborn talents--combined with training as emissaries, spies, judges, diplomats, scouts, counselors, warriors, and more--make them indispensable to their monarch and realm. Sought and Chosen by mysterious horse-like Companions, they are bonded for life to these telepathic, enigmatic creatures. The Heralds of Valdemar and their Companions ride circuit throughout the kingdom, protecting the peace and, when necessary, defending their land and monarch. Now, twenty-three authors ride with Mercedes Lackey to her magical land of Valdemar, adding their own unique voices to the Heralds, Bards, Healers, and other heroes of this beloved fantasy realm."--Provided by publisher.… (more)

I love the way she keeps her short stories entwined in the base storyline. I want to know more about Paxia and the effects of the vrondi There have to have been more people affected like this.

The usual assortment of stories, most of which are serials (that is, there was a previous installment in one or more previous anthologies). Nothing really stood out for me - well, OK, I remember the Iron Street Watch story, I like them. I don't know if the authors were given a theme for some

reason, or they all just happened to hit on it - but the vast majority of these stories are about Love, in one form or another. Usually slightly mishandled, thereby giving rise to the conflict of the story. Romantic love, parent-and-child love, friendship amounting to love, unrequited love...all the way down to rape, which is sort of the opposite (though that story also had friendship amounting to love). Each story was reasonably rich in its own right; it was just odd seeing the same theme popping up so many times.

There are just too many stories in here that don't fit into the Valdemar universe.
