Description

Lawyer. Demon. Lily Knight is both-half-human, half-succubus, and utterly dangerous. Lily protects her secret and the safety of those around her by abstaining from the skin-to-skin contact that would grant her superhuman powers. An ambitious criminal prosecutor, she's all work and no play, determined to prove herself in the courtroom to atone for the ex-lovers she's left for dead in her past. But after a fellow succubus turns up murdered and the police arrest an innocent man, Lily discovers evidence of a supernatural killer stalking the foggy San Francisco streets. And when human justice falls short, she launches an unsanctioned investigation to find the real culprit. To stop the killer, she must embrace the full power of her heritage and risk the soul of the handsome suspect she can't help but fall for. Can Lily face her true nature without losing her humanity-or will she become the monster she fears most of all?… (more)

I found this a fast paced read with lots of action. I would have liked a bit more character development between the various action elements, and also some follow through and consistency in the earlier details of the main character, Lily, and her subsequent actions. However if you enjoy a light,

Given my recent interest in the court system, I was hooked by up and coming prosecutor Lilly Knight, a half succubus moonlighting as an ordinary human in San Francisco. That is, until she trips over a succubus corpse in the park and is dragged into a string of murders, a rushed prosecution, and too

many secrets with a handsome knew acquaintance and an insufferable old friend. This NA fantasy romance stands alone while leaving strong hooks for the sequel.

First, let me say that I was given an early reviewer copy of this in exchange for an honest review (through the LibraryThing Early Reviewer program).

Now that that's out of the way... I really enjoyed this book. The exposition didn't feel gratuitous. Even the sexy parts moved the story forward. I

kind of wish it had been a standalone - not sure why everything has to be a series now - but still a really well written and fun book.

Yeah, not a winner. The beginning was interesting - a very strange world, here-and-now with the addition of demons, in secret. Lily was a bit annoying with her low self-esteem (I'm dangerous, avoid me!), but it read like she might develop into something more. And in the end, it kind of worked out -

she did improve, on several levels. But the middle was unbearable - I finally had to just skip over a chunk. She made wrong choice after wrong choice after the worst possible choice, over and over. I really liked the scene where she warded off Kaine and his plans... and then she ran away, leaving her boss with the worst possible interpretation of her (stupid) actions. I dislike unreliable narrator anyway, which is most of the point of this book - and apparently the next one too, she's going to have to deal with another brainwashed demon (or cambion, I couldn't tell from the excerpt). Excellent writing - rich characters, very good description, great dialog - but not a story that was worth reading for me.

I accidentally read Book 3 first. Oops! But if you do the same, no worries. You can still go back and enjoy the previous books. (Well I haven't yet read book 2, but I suspect it won't be a problem.) I have to admit that some of the twists in this book were a wee bit spoiled by having read the 3rd

installment so recently, but it was quite fun to see how some of the relationships changed over time. In this installment, our protagonist -- a half-succubus/half-human -- is working as an Assistant District Attorney when she stumbles (literally) into a case involving other succubi. Great pacing, lovely well-rounded characters, and good dialogue that doesn't go overboard into "too perfect/witty to be real" territory. Characters make questionable decisions, second-guess themselves, and find ways to make the best of their situations, whether the situation is of their own making or not. Happily recommended.
