Her father reneges on Oliver's deal to purchase the business from him he decides to let Meg and Oliver work the boat for the lobster season and at the end of the season, he'll pick whichever he believes to be the most worthy of his family's business.

A trusted friend of Oliver's encourages him to be nice to Meg, even though all of their problems began with his treatment of Meg. The friend lets him know that he should make a strong attempt at becoming friends with Meg so that they can have a successful lobster season.

Meg isn't sure that she can trust Oliver, since he had hurt her so badly, in the past. But, after a few mishaps, the two begin a fledgling friendship, partnership, and begin the road towards forgiveness and redemption. Highly recommend.

My rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Beyond the Tides tells a powerful tale where the main character Meg Whitaker’s life is about to take an abrupt turn. Meg has been teaching students and
Show More
enjoying it on the island but now her father has made the decision to sell his fishing business to spend more time with his wife, who is in declining health. Meg, to this point, has no desire to take over the lobster fishing business partly because being on the water makes her ill. However, when she learns who he is selling the business to, Meg doesn’t want the family business to go Oliver. Meg and Oliver have a past that is littered with pain and unforgiveness. When her dad has them work together before he makes the final decision as to who to sell to, Meg and Oliver once again become competitors.
As I read the story, I was captivated by how the small community came together to support the family. There is also the aspect of the tightness of the fishing community and the written as well as unwritten rules regarding the fishing trade. Oliver’s family has been through the mill with a family history of pain and brokenness that we just get a small sampling of in this tale. While the story focuses on Meg and Oliver, Oliver has two other brothers and I get the sense that their stories may be told soon. By the end of the novel, I was encouraged by the themes of faith, redemption, forgiveness and hope that come across in the story. When you’re done reading the book, look for and enjoy Liz Johnson’s earlier stories as they are as intriguing as Beyond the Tides!

Meg Whitaker has never hesitated to help her family, even leaving college and coming home to teach when her mother became ill. She loves her parents dearly and would do anything for them so is devastated when she learns that her father wants to sell his fishing business to Oliver Ross. Meg and
Show More
Oliver have been enemies since high school and she will do anything she can to keep him from getting the business including running it herself even though she hates getting up early and gets seasick the second she steps on a boat. Oliver wants the business badly and is willing to fight for it. But while the two are fighting for the business are their hearts fighting for each other?

“Beyond the Tides” is the very nicely done first book in Liz Johnson’s Prince Edward Island Shores series. While I often feel that romance novels tend to drag on, repeating themselves over and over until the main characters finally admit they are in love with very little plot, but that was not the case with this book. I was immediately hooked on the two main characters from the first page and loved reading this book as both characters grew as people as their attraction to each other grew. Both are nicely done characters – Meg is trying to be strong for her family, leaving a job she loves because of her mother’s illness but slowly realizing that being strong means it is okay to be weak as well. Oliver is another great character – haunted by his father’s past, he is desperate to build a new life but wonders if he can ever escape his past. This was a good read as each of them struggle with their problems and grow stronger and closer together. All of this is well done and believable. I particularly ached for Meg as she struggled with her mother’s illness. The fishing scenes were also well done – in fact everything about this book was well done!

“Beyond the Tides” is a nicely done romance!

Beyond the Tides by Liz Johnson

A mystery disease tearing her parents' world apart brings Megan home, only to learn her father is going to sell the family business – her inheritance – to her nemesis, Oliver, the person who stole her future in one rash act 10 years earlier. Divided loyalties –
Show More
or opposing goals – force Meg to choose between her family and her career, her own dreams and the family legacy.

Is Oliver really the selfish, cruel person Megan has painted him to be for the past decade? How does one live as a believer while holding a grudge? How do you forgive and learn to trust when someone has hurt you in the past? Who is sabotaging the boat - and why? What lengths would Oliver go to, in order to achieve his dream? How far would Megan go to hold on to her family legacy?

Reminiscent of Gilbert and Anne – Megan holds stubbornly to her grudge against Oliver, while he tries everything to end the feud... partly so she'll concede to her father selling him the business, partly because it's the right thing to do.

The characters in this story are compelling – not just Megan and Oliver... Mama Potts, Violet, Whitaker, Levi, Kyle and Sandra are all well developed and I found myself wanting to know more about them. I was especially intrigued by Levi – why is he so silent?, and Violet – what is her story? Where did she come from? I hope that Liz Johnson tells their stories in future novels for this series. I'm also eager to discover what happened to Dean Ross (Oliver's father), and to Eli the prodigal brother who's making headlines in the sports world.

I received an advance reader's copy of this novel with no expectations of a positive review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.

This read quickly became a page turner, and a story about lobster boats, well, actually it is much more than that.

The pain and ridicule of the sins of a father, Oliver endured this, and his acting out in his hurt affected a young girl and her science project.

Fast forward and now Meg's father wants
Show More
to sell his lobster business to this guy that wrecked her future, or did he?

Now Meg is willing to do anything to get her father to give her the business, including enduring sea sickness, good thing there are now patches. We are there to see her as she takes on the job of running the boat, using her unknown muscles, and learning from her nemesis!

There are surprises revealed, so keep page turning, and enjoying, and I am excited there is another book coming!

I received this book through the Publisher Revell, and was not required to give a positive review.

I started Beyond the Tides on my lunch break and work. I hated to put it down. When I got home that night, I didn't stop reading until I finished it. The descriptions of the fishing boat too me back to the days when I lived near the Outer Banks of North Carolina and spent time walking the docks
Show More
there. And the struggles both the main characters felt and dealt with touched on areas of my life as well. Good story and a great summer read. But also one that both inspired and comforted me. I am really looking forward to the next title in the series!

Ten years ago, Meg and Oliver parted as enemies. Now, they are forced to work together on Meg’s father’s lobster boat. And why? For the prize of winning the rights to the boat and the highly sought-after lobster fishing license. Though they began this journey with hard feelings, bordering on
Show More
hatred, it soon became apparent to both of them that the years had changed them, and the old hard feelings really didn’t exist anymore. Especially when they began to share their innermost thoughts. Oliver has been trying hard to help support his mom and brother in the years since his dad abandoned the family. Meg is coping with grief and fear as an unnamed disease is slowly but surely stealing away her mom’s strength and mental capabilities. How all this finally is resolved makes for some pretty engrossing reading. Themes of forgiveness and caring, as well as acceptance of things you cannot change also figure in the story. And though it might seem strange, romance can blossom any old time, even on a lobster boat. This well-written and intriguing romance is peopled with complex and likable characters. The first of a series, it’s a great beginning to what promises to be an equally wonderful series.

Beyond the Tides by Liz Johnson has Meg Whitaker enjoys her teaching position at the local high school. She gave up her dream to be closer to home when her mother became ill. Then Meg learns that her father is going to retire and sell Whitaker Fishing to her archnemesis, Oliver Ross. Meg does not
Show More
want the business to go out of the family. Meg’s father decides to let Meg and Oliver compete for the business. They will work together for the season and at the end of it, her father will decide which one of them will get the fishing business. Neither one intends to lose. Beyond the Tides is a traditional Christian romance. The story has developed characters and a gorgeous setting. I enjoyed the vivid descriptions of Prince Edward Island. It is a place I have always wanted to visit. I read Beyond the Tides, but I could not get into the story. It is a sweet romance that deals with healing, loss of a dream, forgiveness, illness, and love. There is talk about the lobster industry with its numerous regulations, building lobster traps, problem with a steady income, resentment from other fisherman, and sabotage. Beyond the Tide has some humor as well. The story is told from Meg and Oliver’s point-of-view. It alternates chapter’s so we get to see things from each person’s perspective. Oliver and Meg each have good reasons for wanting the business. What is the best way to resolve this conundrum? It is easy to predict how this story will play out. I would have liked more action that would have helped the pacing of the story (it was on the slow side). If you like to read Christian romances, then you will enjoy Beyond the Tides.

This book will make you cry in many places and laugh in a few. There is a lot of romance and two people learning how to be good friends again. I loved the descriptions of what happens on a lobster boat and what someone who gets seasick might feel. This is a page Turner because you need to know if
Show More
Oliver or Meg will get the boat. I also love Mama Potts and would love some of her muscle salve. I received a copy of this book from Revell for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.

Beyond The Tides by Liz Johnson is book 1 in the Prince Edward Island Shores series. This book captivated me from the start! Liz Johnson always draws me right in with her contemporary romance novels. The characters are brought to life with their unique personality traits, painful pasts and human
Show More
flaws. While the main character, Meg Whitaker, is a strong female role who decides to take over her dad's lobster business. The supporting role is an enemy from her childhood with his own story to tell. He to is trying to win the bid for her father's fishing boat. The secondary characters are as important as the main characters and weave through the book beautifully. You will feel as though you are living in the town and are familiar with the characters. The small island setting is charming and quaint. The storyline will make you laugh and then pull at your heart strings. It has themes the of grief, forgiveness, determination and family. The best part of the book to me is the surprise ending! Yes, this contemporary romance has a plot twist. If you are a fan of Denise Hunter, Suzanne Woods Fisher or Becky Wade, you will enjoy this novel by Liz Johnson.

This book was given to me through Revell Reads program, this review is completely my own and freely given

I enjoyed the book but did not find anything particularly exciting about it. It is a typical love story. The twist was the setting, I have not read a book with a Canadian lobster fishing
Show More
background. I found that interesting and unique.

This is a Christian book but by no means preachy. In fact, it is barely Christian with only a few mentions of attending church. Otherwise, it's mainly a good, clean read.

I did not enjoy the part where they brought up a brother a few times. I guess the author felt it was needed to continue the series, but I felt it left too much unsaid or too much said that was not needed.

I give this a 3 out of 5-star review.

Liz Johnson is a fairly new to me author. I read a story she wrote for a collection of Christmas novellas and enjoyed it. I will be looking for more of her books as Beyond the Tides was a read that kept my attention from the first page to the last. The characters were realistic and likable. Meg and
Show More
Oliver were each bent on having the lobster fishing business but were coerced to work together to see who truly deserved to be the owner. Watching their relationship develop and change was engaging to say the least. The past was determined to not remain the past and was definitely intruding on the present and the future. I liked how the author kept the tension high and kept me wondering where the relationship would end up. Prince Edward Island is a place I'd like to visit one day and this story reinforced that desire. The author added lots of tidbits of information regarding the lobster fishing industry which I found quite interesting. Readers who enjoy contemporary romance will not want to miss this first book in the Prince Edward Island Shores.
I won an advance reader copy of the book through LibraryThing and was not required to write a review. The opinions are my own.

Beyond the Tides by Liz Johnson is book one in the Prince Edward Island Shores. Meg’s father has decided to sell his fishing business so he can care for his wife. His daughter, Meg, has turned him down before but now that Oliver has decided to buy it, she wants it. Her father has given then a

This is a sweet Christian contemporary romance story of forgiveness and working together for the good of all. I really enjoyed reading this story. The writing is so clear it is easy to imagine the surroundings and what is happening. I really enjoyed the parts in the story of Meg spending time with her mom and the enjoyment her mother gets from it. I enjoyed the determination Meg had to try to keep the fishing business in the family and the devotion she has to her parents.

I wasn't sure about this book -- how could a book about lobster fishing be a good romance story....but it turned out to be a well written romance with well written characters and a great plot. Meg's father is a lobster fisherman on Prince Edward Island. Her mother is very sick from an unknown
Show More
disease that doctors haven't able to diagnose. Meg has always told her dad that she wasn't interested in taking over his business because she loved being a teacher. However, when her dad decides that he needs more time with her mom, he tells her that he plans to sell the boat to Oliver Ross. She's so shocked at this decision that she tells her dad that she wants the business left to her -- she's known Oliver for years and hates him for ruining a science project in high school that kept her from getting a scholarship. Since then, she's thought of him as her enemy and just can't believe that her father plans to sell to him. Her dad comes up with a temporary solution and wants them both to handle the boat during the upcoming season and he will make a decision at the end of the season. Even though she has seasickness every time she gets on the boat, she agrees to this compromise. At first there is a lot of animosity between Meg and Oliver on the boat but the more time they spend together, the more their feels change for each other. Will there be a romance between them at the of the season or will they still be enemies?

My only problem with this book is that I didn't like Meg much during the first half of the book. She comes off a spoiled young woman who doesn't care about anyone else. As the romance starts, we see a big change in her personality and she becomes a great main character.

Don't worry about the lobster fishing, instead read this book to discover a great Christian romance.

Thanks to Revell for a copy of this book to read and review.

I was drawn into this unique story immediately! It checked all the boxes: Mystery, humor, romance, inspiration, and faith!
Oliver had been helping Meg’s father in his lobster business for many years. Both men had love, respect and close working relationship. The unusual thing is that Meg had a
Show More
deep seated resentment and bitterness against Oliver for something that happened 10 years ago in high school. You could even say she loathed him. She had moved away and had a teaching job she loved.
Her mother’s health takes a frightening turn for the worse. This forces her father to sell his business so he can take care of his wife. The logical one to buy it is Oliver, who desperately needs income. Meg has never worked the business and get violently sea sick even standing on a boat. Her grudge spurs her to tell her father she wants it. Oliver has the skills and loyalty and it is Meg’s legacy. Which should he choose and how? To resolve the problem, he decides Oliver and Meg work side by side on the boat for the fishing season and then he will pick one of them to own his business. Talk about pouring gas on the fire! With gritty determination they both take the challenge.
What transpires is beautiful. The constant act of working together brings about miraculous changes in both their lives. God begins to work in both their lives in unexpected ways and does what is seemingly impossible. There are lots of surprises along the way for the reader and so many really funny moments.
I so enjoyed this book and cannot wait to read the next one in this series 2

Lobster fishing seems an odd setting for a romance--but Liz Johnson makes it work.

Oliver Ross and Meg Whitaker have a history. Oliver still feels guilty that his actions ruined Meg's chances at her future plans. Meg hasn't really forgiven him all these years later even though her life seems to have
Show More
turned out all right. The town also doesn't seem to want to forgive Oliver for the actions of his father or his own previous actions as a teen.

When Meg's father decides to sell the family business to Oliver, it upsets Meg and other lobster fishing outfits in Victoria. Meg combats it by claiming she wants the business despite never having worked a day at it in her life so far.

Meg's father's solution is to make Oliver and Meg work together for the season and he will make a decision at the end of the season as to whether he will honor his agreement with Oliver or pass the business on to Meg.

The other businesses let their displeasure be known to Meg and Oliver (who are trying to take the weight of the business off Meg's father's shoulders so he can be free to care for his ailing wife without outside worries).

Forgiveness is a big theme in the book. So is "make memories while you can".

Meg had shown no interest in her family business until someone else expressed their own desire to own Whitaker Fishing. Someone named Oliver Ross, her teenage arch-nemesis! How could she allow him to have it?

Author Liz Johnson shares an intriguing story filled with the powerful emotions that many
Show More
of us have faced. Grief, pain, and the reluctance to set aside old animosities are present but Johnson's strong message of faith, hope, and forgiveness helps buffer their impact. Honorable but fallible characters, the dynamic chemistry between Meg and Oliver, and a beautiful setting make this a story to read and savor! This is a great first book in the Prince Edward Island Shores series and I look forward to returning to Prince Edward Island!

What a delightful read by Liz Johnson. It's like a Canadian Christian Hallmark, a bit of enemies-to-lovers, where family and healing are as important as love and success. I fell in love with the characters immediately and couldn't wait for them to figure it out while also appreciating the tension
Show More
and slight air of mystery and danger that didn't really get resolved the way you initially expect.

This was an interesting story of two people who have hard feelings towards one another due to an event that happened in high school. When Meg's father decides to sell the family business, Meg hears of her father planning to sell it to the one person she can't stand, Oliver Ross. As the book
Show More
continues, a contest to see who buys the fishing business, brings Meg together with Oliver and they have to work together for a season in a contest to see who will be chosen as the new owner.
There are lots of ups and downs in the both the lives of the two trying to be the one chosen and in the business itself. They go through personal growth as they learn of one another's lives and past that brought them to this point. And Meg gives up her position at school as a teacher to work on the fishing boat.

I enjoyed the story and thought it was interesting and set in a beautiful place.
