first time (or loved him already and wanted to know the beginning story)

I _love_ Prince Valiant - I've been reading him since I was a kid, and have collected many of the books of strips. The first few, though, are no longer in print and are _hard_ to find. Fortunately they show up in libraries every once in a while. Again - it's neat to see the beginnings of things.

It's nice to see Val as he works at gaining his skills, and starts to make the friends he'll keep for the rest of his life...

Fun seeing Valiant at the beginnings of things. I've read this as often as I've found it (in libraries, I've never seen one for sale).

I bought this from Grocott's children's section in 1990/91 - the drawing is absolutely superb but the stories really quite dull. I tried to read it to my children when they grew older but we all found it dull. The comic strip has appeared in The Sunday Times my entire life and used to be my

father's favourite when he was a child.

The reason the book gets a three is that the artwork is meticulous and beautifully drawn - lovely clear lines, good perspective and composition and well-observed details - which makes up for the rather tedious tale.
