The Arabian nights is on my literary bucket list. This selection marked the start of this considerable effort. From what I can determine, these tales are all dealing with treasure, revenge, poor somewhat evil spirits punished by King Soloman (and stuffed into jars, lamps, cans, Tupperware and all

number of containers), magical transportation, etc. Who knew these strories were so... so religious?

This is a very nice edition of stories retold from the Arabian Nights canon written for middle grades and older and illustrated with Maxfield Parrish color plates from the 1909 edition. There were several stories that I did not read as a child/pre-teen and a couple that I have not yet encountered

in the Burton version that I have also been reading off and on. I enjoyed Wiggin's selection and think it would be a good introduction for anyone. Recommended.

A quote from Mark Helprin's introduction: "Running unavoidably throughout A Thousand Nights and A Night are the themes of captivity, escape, the restoration of a shattered past, and voyages in strange and frightening lands."
