I found this to be a compelling start to the series by Leslie Fish but ultimately let down by weaker later instalments by the other authors.

Pseudo-medieval setting (rather the kind of thing that Pratchett's Ankh-Morpork is a parody of), with magic playing a slightly second-fiddle role to antique technology in a tale about the effort to develop a cannon while fleeing/hiding from the invading barbarians. Some nice scenes and characters
