Description

Two stories by the Hugo and Nebula Award winning author Roger Zelazny following the development of an evil wizard's baby taken to earth unaware of his dark magic past. He returns to his home land and is a powerful sorcerer, but he has many enemies and one want him dead... In 'Changling', the people had long suffered under Det Morson's power...lived in terror of his dragons and other minions. When at last, the wizard Mor joined the fight, Det and his infamous Rondoval castle were destroyed. But the victory was not complete, for the conquerors found a baby amidst the rubble: Det's son, Pol. Unwilling to kill the child, Mor took him to a world where the ways of magic were considered mere legends - a world called Earth. Years later, the boy grew to become Daniel Chain, a nightclub guitarist possessing mental energies he doesn't understand. But those mental abilities will soon determine his fate in a terrifying clash of power...on a world which, as yet, he knows nothing about. Though it does involve magic this book has nothing to do with elves or other fairy creatures. The title is derived from the fact that two of the main characters had been switched at birth.

Although I am a big fan of the sketchy sorts of pen drawings found in certain editions of this book (and it's

sequal "Madwand") the actual story it's self has little to recommend it. IMHO the "Amber" books are a much better representation of Zelazny's work.

This is the first of two books Zelazny wrote in this series. I'm sorry he didn't complete any more. Again, he's mixed Fantasy with SF into a very interesting tapestry that's a quick, fun & interesting read. He's put a somewhat unique spin on well worn subjects & brought them into conflict & out

again.Madwand is the second book & I almost wish I hadn't read it. Not that it wasn't as good as this one, but I could easily live with this book as a stand alone book. Madwand ends on a cliff hanger that will never be resolved because the master has left us. Some others have tried to finish his works & except for Betancourt's prequel to Amber series, I don't think they've done a very good job. Even Betancourt's works haven't been universally approved, although I like them. Worst of all, his series will likely never be finished. The fifth & final book of the series was written & the publisher folded before releasing it. The new publisher has no interest in publishing it. SHAME!!! (Oberon is left in a tight fix at the end of book 4 - how does he get out of it?!!!)

Quite enjoyed this author. Another one to read more of. Interesting mix of hard sci-fi and fantasy.

Interesting blind of scifi and fantasy. Seems a bit 'pulpy', but there's nothing wrong with a bit of that once in a while.

Good action story with deep characters and very engagingly written. It was hard to put down.

Babies switched by a Merlin-type character grow up in separate worlds, but twenty years later are headed for a showdown.

I liked the characters, especially the supporting cast, and the slightly wacky plot.
