It's not necessary to have read the first book in the Steele & Glass series in order to enjoy "The Mapmaker's Apprentice," however, once you start reading this series, you're going to want to read them all, so you might as well give in right off the bat. This book has the same wonderful characters
Show More
that I loved from the first book and this time, we get to learn a bit more about them and see different facets to their personalities. I found myself laughing out loud a few times during the interactions between Willie and Aunt Letitia, and the relationship between India and Matt evolves a bit as well.

I really love the setting and atmosphere of this book, with its fog-shrouded London streets, candle-lit corridors and secretive and intriguing artisan guilds. If you love historical settings, light-hearted romance, witty humor and lovable characters, you're going to love this wonderful book and series from outstanding author CJ Archer.

Utterly obsessed with this series and cannot read them fast enough!

Book two in the Glass & Steele series picks up right after book one. At the request of Commissioner Munro, Matt and India have been tasked with finding the whereabouts of a missing mapmakers apprentice (also the Commissioners

illegitimate son). The young man, Daniel, recently showed exceptional skill and aptitude at his trade as a mapmaker, and had recently commissioned the sale of a custom map to an unknown buyer, something practically unheard of for a young apprentice of only a few weeks. Matt and India begin to suspect that magic is in play when they begin to investigate. Daniel was a magical mapmaker and all signs point to his magic being a main factor in his disappearance. Matt's health is still failing, and the crew continue to look for clues as to the whereabouts of the mysterious Chronos. Can they find the missing boy before it's too late? And can any headway be made into fixing Matts timepiece as it continues to dwindle in power?

Another amazing read by C.J. Archer! This one was filled with the same interesting and complex plot line, action packed adventure, and deepening bonds between characters. I really enjoyed learning about another guilds (Mapmakers Guild) relationship with magic and how it can be harnessed and utilized. The sleuthing pair, Matt and India, continue to develop their budding relationship in an almost maddening game of "will they wont they". I can only hope the agony of waiting will be worth it because these two are meant to be! (I have a sneaking suspicious it's going to be GLORIOUS! Hence me tearing through the series so quickly). This one definitely keep me guessing and my heart racing, the entire book! Again, the supporting characters, Cyclops, Willie, and Duke were crucial elements of such an enjoyable read as were their loyalty and burgeoning relationships with India.

Moving on to the next in the series now, stayed tuned for more!

This is the 2nd book in the Glass and Steele series and I didn't like this quite as much as the first book in the series. The characters are still fun and engaging and I enjoyed the mystery (both the main mystery and the mystery around India's magic). However (aside from the smaller mystery featured
Show More
in this story) the story doesn't make a lot of progress.

I listened to this on audiobook and the audiobook was very well done. I enjoy the narrator for this series quite a bit.

As for the story, I had hoped India's magic would feature more in this story but it really doesn't. The whole issue with Matt and his magical watch doesn't really go much of anywhere either. Matt and India do end up solving the mystery of a missing Mapmaker’s apprentice. However, this still kind of felt like part of a book rather than a complete novel.

While I do understand this is part of a series, I am beginning to feel like this story is being broken down into small sections just so the author can sell more books.

Overall I am uncertain whether or not I will continue this series right now. It's a pleasant series to listen to on audiobook and I like the quirky characters but it just doesn't feel like it's going anywhere.

The second book in the Glass and Steele series is earning better reviews than "The Watchmaker's Daughter," which surprises me. While I thought the mystery was better in "The Mapmaker's Apprentice," I missed the banter between India and Matt. There was still evidence of it but not to the same extent

that was in "The Watchmaker's Daughter" which made it such a delightful read.

This novel never went anywhere. The plot was slow at times, there was no progress on finding Chronos, there was too much emphasis on Miss Glass' effort to match Matt to a 'suitable' girl and there was no character development. I will give the third book a try but if there isn't a substantial improvement, I will be giving the rest of the series a miss.

Still on a quest to find a way to better health, Matthew and India take on a joint mission to find a missing mapmaker's apprentice. Once again these two have me transfixed on the story that unfolds.

{Second of Glass and Steele trilogy; fantasy, magic} (2016)

India (the watchmaker's daughter) is now employed by Matt as they continue their search, along with the rest of his friends, for Chronos who created the watch to which Matt's life is linked. They discover a clue but will have to wait a week

until they can follow that lead. In the meantime, a case is brought to them by the police commissioner involving the disappearance of a mapmaker's apprentice. India soon realises that the apprentice is a magician and the search for him may unearth clues to her own heritage.

Fun with a hint of romance. One thing i like about this series is that, though it is set a couple of years after Jack the Ripper’s crimes, it doesn’t try to pretend it was written in that period so I don’t get constantly thrown out of the story.
