Description

Things are looking up for Tony Chu, the cibopathic federal agent with the ability to get psychic impressions from the things he eats. He's got a girlfriend. He's got a partner he trusts. He even seems to be getting along with his jerk boss. But his ruthless ex-partner is still out there, operating outside of the law, intending to make good on his threats against Tony and everybody Tony cares about. It's just a matter of time before their investigations collide, blood spills and-inevitably-body parts are eaten. Presenting the third storyline of CHEW, the follow-up to the New York Times Best Sellers 'Taster's Choice' and 'International Flavor.' Check out the strange and darkly comic series about cops, crooks, cooks, cannibals and clairvoyants. Winner of the Eisner Award for Best New Series and nominated for Eagle and Harvey awards to boot!.… (more)

Summary: Volume 3 of this series spends a fair amount of time diving into the backstory of Tony Chu, the detective that can receive psychic visions of the life of the things he eats... things that, in his line of work, include the corpses of murder victims. We also get some hints that Mason Savoy,
Show More
Tony's former partner and fellow cibopath, is not only not out of the game, but also is wrapped up in some very shady dealings involving chicken-frog hybrids designed to get around the bird-flu-inspired poultry ban.

Review: This series as a whole is a) thoroughly bizarre and b) frenetically scattered, so saying that this volume didn't quite have a direct narrative arc to it is pretty redundant. It seemed to be split about 50/50 between Tony's personal life and history, and his job and the series-long conspiracy plot that's on a slow boil. However, the bouncing back and forth between the two meant that nothing was ever fully addressed or dealt with satisfactorily. On the other hands, it was still a fun (if gross, morbid, and seriously strange) read, and since this is only 1/4 of the way through this comic's planned run, I shouldn't be too surprised that we're still getting more questions than answers. 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Continues the tale of Agent Chu who has premonitions about the origins of something when he eats it. To solve crimes he needs to sample various things from weird fruits to dead dogs. Funny, gory and amazingly drawn. Would make an excellent movie or computer game.

So glad I finally got around to reading this volume.

So much happens in volume three and all of it is very intriguing. Such a fantastic read. As always this series is a pleasure to read, despite (or because) it is so utterly disgusting.

Volume 3 in the Tony Chu saga.
I am finding it interesting that the further along the story goes the better the overall writing and story gets and the less and less I find myself caring about the main characters.
I'm fascinated by the world, I love the side characters and want to see more of the
Show More
chogs and Poyo and I want to know what is going on with the main mystery of the avian flu, the weird sky writing and those plants... I just can't stand any of the main characters, they are beginning to annoy and bore me.
But again, the story is getting better, the writing is tighter and the world is beginning to feel even more fleshed out and substantial and I intend to keep reading as I really do want to know what is going on, I just hope I start to find the main characters interesting again soon.

Rob Guillory's art is amazing. His super-stylized and highly expressive characters really give life to John Layman's original story of cibopathic agents who solve crime through their taste buds.

This volume of Chew had several small stories but each one did move the over arching story line forward and I really enjoyed it. I was especially excited b/c normally volumes like this annoy me but the shorter mysteries were enough to keep me entertained and not frustrated like I normally am.

this volume Tony and Amelia finally get together and they are probably one of the most well matched couples I've ever enjoyed. Due to Tony's partners' machinations, his boss is finally off of his back and we get to briefly meet the rest of Tony's family at the end including a twin sister and daughter. We also get a peak at a psychotic ex girlfriend that I am hoping we find out more about in the future.

Still digging this series! Love the "egg dealers" on the street corners!
This set of stories appears to take a dig at Monsanto and genetically altered foods, which I love! In the "Chew" world, it's Montero and, mmm..., fricken!

My negative for this collection is that the chapter 1 plot is almost
Show More
completely lifted from the movie "The Freshman". It works for the overall storyline, but I was bummed to see it.

Still, this is a great series and I'm on to the next volume for sure!
