Having read a number of Patricia Rice’s historical novels I was unsure what her novels set in the present would be like. I was lucky enough to receive a copy of “Risk of Love and Magic” from Library Thing and happily sat down to read this third book in the California Malcoms series. Reference

is made to characters in the two previous books with a bit of background to make them part of the story that encourages the reader to want to read the previous books in this series.

The story is of Magnus, a doer, and Nadine, a thinker. Magnus manages to help Nadine escape from a mental institution her stepfather is holding her in. They spend time together working to find her sister and then overthrow her wicked stepfather. This is a fun and easy read with a happy if somewhat unrealistic ending. The interaction between Magnus and Nadine is interesting. The paranormal events are alluded to but not dealt with in depth. New characters were introduced for future books in the series. Overall I enjoyed the book and would recommend it to anyone who has an afternoon to spend reading a fun if somewhat fluffy romance.

I received this book free through LibraryThing in exchange for my review. Rice doesn't give new readers any background information about the series, so I had to read the summaries of the previous books to have any idea what was going on. Readers just jump right into the story, which was fairly
Show More
confusing. However, the characters were fun and the book enjoyable. It became obvious early on that Rice was using the Manic Pixie Dream Girl trope for her main character, with other characters even calling her a "manic elf." Also, I found it funny that Rice constantly "name drops" current technology. I think it's believable enough for a character to search satellite images online, without actually stating that she used "Google Earth." The number of technology mentions by name became so overt, Rice should be paid for product placement. The end of the book felt a little rushed and a bit of a let-down after the fast-paced beginning of the story. The only true disappointment I had with this book was Rice's description of some of the characters. She labels the main character "autistic," but has other characters call her "La Loca," "crazy," and "nutcase," and other people with psychiatric issues, "dementos." Other characters, who are Chinese, are referred to as "Oriental" or described as having "distinctly Asian features." This language may not bother other readers at all, but by the time I finished the book, it certainly colored how I felt about it.

Even though this book was the third in the series, I still enjoyed it. I wish there was a chapter dedicated to explaining the back story on the main characters, but even without it, I found this book to be an enjoyable read. I try not to over analyze the fact that some of the characterizations
Show More
aren't accurate and just read for enjoyment. If I had read the first two books in the series, perhaps I would have enjoyed it even more.

The main character was written to be a genius who has been deprived of normal childhood development but I found the portrayal of her character annoying. As a summer fluff novel, it is okay.

The third book in the series, I had only read a couple of chapters when I knew I wanted to read the previous two. I hunted down and bought the second 'Trouble With Air & Magic' I thoroughly enjoyed it. I couldn't get the first as it was in hard cover only. Having read the second increased my
Show More
enjoyment of the third. Fast paced, great story and I just loved the characters and the intriguing world of the gifted and para- normal that the book explores. I haven't yet finished it, i don't want it to end. When I finish it tonight I will be looking at this authors other series. I think I have found a new favorite author. One who guarantees me a good read.

Risk of Love and Magic by Patricia Rice is the third book in a series. I hadn't read the first two, but she gave enough backstory that I didn't get lost in the plot. The book is pure fluffy romance. Yes, there was some action, but I think that took a back seat to the romance. Coming off a
Show More
particularly good book to this one, I'm afraid this one suffered in comparison. The whole beautiful geek and studly male is so overdone in so many novels. It makes you wander if they were falling in love or just lust. There were a couple of gratuitous sex scenes that only slowed down the pacing rather than add to the story. I would have preferred a couple of characters with some physical flaws, learning to love each other than with all the instant attraction stuff.

This is the first book that I have read of this author & pf this series the Malcoms. At first I found the story a little boring but I kept reading it. And boy am I glad that I did. Ms Rice did not let me down at all!! The story line is completely different from anything that I have ever thought
Show More
about reading. Ms Rice has an imagination that is truly creative. I would never of thought to write about mind reading; which is what this story is about.
The story starts out in mental hospital where we find a young women trying to escape from. She is using her mind to send coded messages to a man to help her. Magnus arrives and helps Nadine escapes - her stepfather the general is trying to use her. actually he has been using her and he had her locked up in the hospital. He has the entire family convinced that she is insane- her sister Vera has gone underground. Magnus helps Nadine find her sister; and together Do they stay together ? All these questions and more are answered in the book for you.
The plot, characters, and the scenes are so real that you begin to find yourself right there beside Nadine and Magnus. I give this book at true honest rating of 5 plus stars in my book. I recommend that you go read this book at once. You will not be disappointed with it at all!!NOW GO GET IT!!!

I loved this book with it's quirky characters. This is the third book in the series; it ties all the story lines together nicely.

Nadine is sheltered and naive, and has been kept a prisoner by the general (her once-loved and trusted step-father)in a mental hospital to work on tracking the Malcolm
Show More
family tree. At the same time she shows and inner strength that is captivating. You can't help but love her.

Magnus is the strong silent type, a doer rather than a thinker, ex-special forces with an extraordinary mechanical bent.

Together they learn to temper their natural inclinations to work well as a team to accomplish a common goal - stop the general.

I love all the different names Nadine has for Magnus depending on how she's feeling toward him at the time. Very amusing.

It was lovely that we got to see Conan and Dorrie's wedding too and saw some more of Oz and Pippa. I like series like this, where you could read it as a stand-alone book if you wanted to, there is enough back story to know what went on before this book, but if you have read the earlier books you can revisit old favourite characters and see where they are now.

I also can't help but chuckle when they talk about getting away to New Zealand (being a Kiwi myself) as if it were as remote as the Congo jungle. There was also a reference to Maori warriors too!

I highly recommend this book and this series.

I received a free copy of this book from the LibraryThing Early Reviewers in exchange for an honest review. Although I didn't read the first two books in the series, enough back story was given so that I didn't feel lost. An enjoyable read, but the main character (Nadine) was a little annoying at
Show More
times.

Nadine Malcolm is a psychic computer genius. From her prison in an asylum she has been secretly helping the Oswin brothers fight her stepfather, the General, and his evil plans to exploit gifted children. When her sister disappears, she sends out calls for help, psychically and through the
Show More
Internet.

Magnus Oswin is an ex-special forces mechanical genius who answers Nadine's calls for help and aids her escape from the asylum. With the help of the Oswin and Malcolm clans, they embark on a mad adventure to find Nadine's sister, save the gifted children and defeat the General once and for all.

This book is the last book in the California Malcolm trilogy. I hope it is not the last book about this entertaining extended family with mysterious psychic powers. As always, Patricia Rice's characters are quirky and interesting. The novel is fast paced and very funny. The relationship between Magnus and Nadine develops in a very satisfying way. I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy romantic suspense with humour.

Risk of Love and Magic (A California Malcolm Novel Book 3) by Patricia Rice
Nadine is being held captive in an insane asylum by her stepfather, the General. When she helped his enemies, he incarcerated her and intends to keep her there as a weapon he can use whenever he needs her. He doesn't expect
Show More
her to escape...

Library Thing and the author gave me the opportunity to read this book for review (thank you). It has been published so check with your local bookstore for a copy. There are earlier books in the series if you wish to grab them all.

Nadine is psychic and has been sending messages about needing help. She occasionally calls too, whenever she can sneak it in. She's well guarded and watched closely, but she still manages to get out the door. The best part of the escape is Magnus. He's gotten the messages, knows she is the Librarian that helped his family and he wants to help her. He just didn't realize how hard that was going to be.

It's a good thing that Magnus and his brothers and friends are all special op boys. They fight hard, have great weapons and technology to use, and they don't back down. Nadine wants to kill the General's computer, but the new tech geek has changed all the passwords, routes, and hidden caches so she doesn't have access anymore. Magnus would be happy with just killing the General, but he tries to tone it down for Nadine. With Nadine, it's first things first and she has to move her sister before the General nabs her. The General puts chips in people, pets, cars, you name it. He wants to know where they are and why and he wants to use them for revenge.

This is a world of high tech with experienced warriors but the General is crazy and that gives him an advantage. When Magnus begins to realize he's falling love with Nadine, it gets even more intense. By the end of the story you better be hanging on to your seat; it's a wild ride. Here you have an action-packed romance that sweeps you along in their adventure. I liked it.

Now I have to read the previous books. I loved all the characters. They were so much fun. Mad Max and La Loca are such cute characters and they had to really learn how to relate to each other. Neither are very good with other people. They both have a lot to learn, but they are willing to try it.

Couldn't finish this book. The characters and plot were too chaotic and I was lost from the beginning. I think this was part of a series, if so I suggest starting from the beginning. I might like it better if I had a clue what was going on.
LibraryThing member bkjake
Despite being a bit lost during the first part of the book (I hadn't realized it was the third book in a series...oopsie), I enjoyed the book overall. A bit light and fluffy in spots, but there's nothing wrong with that. I really appreciated the main characters actually communicating with each
Show More
other, instead of using the formulaic plot device of mis- or non-communication.
The paranormal part was very loosely handled, but I have to think that the author probably covered most of her mythos in the first two books.
All in all, a pleasant light read with a satisfying ending, but not so riveting that I'm going to bother to read the first two anytime soon.

As many others have said, this is the third book in a series, so you will have a better time understanding what is going on if you go back and read those previous two books. Personally, I like the way Patricia doesn't spend a lot of time describing who's who, and assumes you have read the previous
Show More
two books. I get impatient with authors who spend a lot of time repetitively going back and recapping previous books. Anyway, this book holds up with the last two in being able to keep you engaged. I really like to see books with female characters who are tech savvy. It was a great read, and I will certainly be looking forward to more books from this author.

The _Risk of Love and Magic_ is a fun read. Nadine Malcom is being held captive by her insane step-father. She figures out a way to broadcast her predicament and Magnus Oswi drives to the rescue. However, they have trouble agreeing on what they should do next.

This book is the third in the
Show More
"California Malcom" series. I hadn't read the other two but I had read the magical historical series (also with Malcoms) which gave me enough context to roughly figure out what was going on. The romance was fine. However, I particularly liked the portrayal of Nadine as smart and tech savvy, if a tad naive. Perhaps it was because I hadn't read the other two books that I found Nadine a lot more interesting than Magnus. Or perhaps, I can just identify with the female computer geek better. In any case, it's a good book to curl up on the sofa with.

I requested this book via the LibraryThing Early Reviewer program.

I really enjoyed this book. Although it was the third in the series, I had no problems with getting into the story and following the characters. From the title of the novel I was expecting actual magic to play a part but it was just the usual psychic abilities that make up the paranormal genre.
LibraryThing member kmascera
Risk of Love and Magic is a very clever book which marries the concept of heightened technical ability with the supernatural. It is a classic clash of science vs. preternatural. I really enjoyed the development of Nadine and Magnus’s relationship. I loved the way Patricia Rice included the
Show More
uncertainty from both Magnus and Nadine’s point of view. It was a nice twist from the nerdy girl just being unsure if the hunk is really into her. Rice’s characters are full of life and color. She does a very good job of making you empathize with each protagonist. Wonderfully written.

Romance, adventure, technology and psychic abilties, all things that make this a fascinating novel. I had a little trouble due to it being number three in the series and I haven't read the other two, but it didn't hinder my enjoyment of book. It is a very interesting story set in an interesting
Show More
world with interesting characters that draw you into their story and develop nicely along with it. I am looking forward to reading more of this series in the future.

This book is really fun to read. Technology, magic, family dynamics and complicated characters combine with a romance. It's appropriate for teens. Dialogue, plot and characters are believable and engaging.

I had trouble starting this book but once I got going I enjoyed it. The main two characters kept you enthralled as to what was going to happen next. The ending was, however a little disappointing as it was leading up to an explosive finish but seemed to fizzle out. I found there was no disadvantage
Show More
in not having read the previous books in the series.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I had not read the first two books of this series when I read this book. It doesn't fully stand alone - I was left with enough questions that I went back and read the first two books then re-read this one.

The series is enjoyable,
Show More
but not particularly inventive. It's got a few nifty quirks, but over all is a basic competent paranormal romance series. The characters were interesting and fairly well-rounded, enough that I wanted to find out what happened and hoped they would get together. As is common in this type of book, the characters fell in love too quickly to be really believable, and the personality conflicts were a bit stereotypical.

In spite of the flaws, both this book and the series were enjoyable reads.

Worth reading.

I really enjoyed this book. A little hard to get started but it really began to intrigue me. I like to read about mental telepathy and/ or mind reading. My mother and I sometimes felt as if we could do some of this. I loved both the main characters of Nadine and Marcus and truly liked the way they
Show More
became involved. I have read several of Patricia Rice's books and will certainly read more of them. Very enjoyable. Thanks for the opportunity to read and review Risk of Love and Magic.

Tbe haunted Magnus Oswin hears a regular plea from the person they describe as the Librarian. When he rescues her from the psychiatric institution she's in she's wearing a tin foil hat. She's been quite sheltered and tends to say what's on her mind rather thank thinking about how someone would take
Show More
it. He finds that she keeps him on his toes, she finds that he's a distraction from her beloved computers.

It's light, fun with a bit of a paranormal undertone and I enjoyed it, I will look for Patricia Rice again.

I didn't like this book as much as I liked the previous one in the series. I'm not sure why. While the female protagonist was very vivid, the male protagonist just seemed kind of boring. The situations they were in seemed kind of ridiculous and many things from the earlier books still didn't make
Show More
sense, e.g., the kidnapping of Donal, Os' son and the death of his wife. The book was OK and worth reading but still somewhat disappointing.
