Description
A defrocked priest attends a school for exorcists and must contend with a re-animated corpse in this horror novel from the author of Sorrow's Edge. Jimmy Holiday, reluctant exorcist, is finally getting the help he needs from the higher-ups. The Order of Markers is sending him to the Vatican's exorcism school. Now, he'll receive the training he should have gotten at the beginning. One problem, someone wants to sabotage him. When his time at the school is cut short, Jimmy receives an interesting new case. It is the assignment that no one wants--a corpse has come back to life. And it isn't a zombie. Too bad nothing goes as expected. Armed with his usual bag of tricks, Jimmy thinks everything will eventually be all right. Well, that is until his betrayer turns out to be the person he trusts most. If you like Darcy Coates, Jack Ketchum, Robert R. McCammon, Willow Rose, and Joe Hill, you'll love this ghostly dark fantasy filled with enough occult and supernatural to scratch that horror itch! Jimmy is an exorcist, seemingly disowned by the church yet under the watch of The Order, an organisation not fully explained. He is designated a Marker, which again wasn't thoroughly explained in this book but I got enough of an idea by the end of the book. He lives with a witch, a ghost, and the spirit of a little girl.
Unfortunately I felt that the plot wasn't clearly developed and it was difficult to tell where the story was going, and the only actual exorcism in the book felt rushed and incomplete.
I didn't mind the informal style and first person narrative to begin with, but it got a bit wearing towards the end of the book, especially with certain phrases being repeated over and over.
An easy to read book, just not quite living up to my hopes.
