This book had a few strong moments, but it was overshadowed by the weak writing. Some of the dialogue felt stunted or rehearsed, and the story trailed on far past the climax. I understand there were elements that still needed to be wrapped up before the conclusion, but most of what occurred after
Show More
the showdown with the big baddie would have contributed more to the overall story if it had happened beforehand.

My favorite part, however, was the main character's strength of conviction. She is a believable twenty-two-year-old, and more than that, she has an admirable backbone. Despite her (unrealistic) desire to drag Rick off to the bedroom every time he joins a scene, she still refuses to marry him because they barely know each other, she knows she has a bad habit of rushing into things, and she isn't comfortable with marrying anyone yet. Her refusal to bow to either of the men wooing her is wonderful to watch, and was almost enough to hold my attention for the duration of the book. Overall, however, I'm glad I got a free ebook version of "The Ghost and the Graveyard" from barnesandnoble.com, and I won't be purchasing or reading the sequel.

Grateful Knight has two jobs, a new house, and a huge debt to pay off thanks to her most recent poor choice in men. With a long history of jumping straight into bad relationships, Grateful intends to take things slow next time. Which is why she's horrified to learn that her closest neighbor, the
Show More
Red Grove Cemetery caretaker, could double as a Calvin Klein underwear model. And then there's the sexy ghost making himself at home in her attic...

Love the main character's name. Wish she wasn't quite so spacy, however. With a smidge less emphasis on sex, this would have had another half a star. Other than that, interesting premise and I wouldn't mind reading more of Grateful's adventures.

When Grateful Knight walked into the cute little house, she thought all her dreams had come true. It was beautiful and quiet, and just what she needed until she realized that it sat right at the foot of the local cemetary. And even then, when she met the local caretaker, a true man of her dreams,
Show More
she still had misgivings. And then she met Prudence and Logan...the house's resident ghosts. And all this with a graveyard full of zombies, vampires and ghouls who ultimately want to kill her. Come to find out, she's also got to "do it" with the sexy caretaker in order for her to become a full fledged witch and combat these scary entities. WTH has Grateful got herself into?

I didn't know what I was getting into when I picked out this novel. I figured it would be another typical supernatural tale.. But this isn't young adult fiction; it is for adults. And I think that makes it so much better.

22-year-old nurse Grateful Knight moves to a new house in a small town after
Show More
her life has practically fallen apart. Her ex both bankrupted her and broke her heart. She's looking for a fresh start and time for herself. But her irresistible neighbor Rick proves to be quite the distraction. Then she discovers there are ghosts in her house and that there is something that's not normal about Rick either. She soon discovers there's more about her past than she could have ever imagined.

I really like Grateful as a narrator/protagonist because she is so normal. And this novel has such a refreshing take on the supernatural that it kept me reading page after page. As soon as I finished it I immediately purchased the second one, though I'd planned on only reading the first. The world Genevieve Jack has created is somewhat familiar - with zombies, vampires, witches, and more - but her protagonist's role makes it new and enticing.

The Ghost and The Graveyard (Knight Games 1) is about Grateful Knight (yeah I totally hated the name at first too but then liked it as it made perfect after I'd finished reading the story) who after a horrible breakup in which her ex pretty much drains her bank account and forces her to start all
Show More
over ends up moving into an old house owned by her dad. It's a bit out of town, pretty much by itself and would be the perfect place to start over except for the gigantic graveyard which surrounds it.

After nearly wrecking her car at the first sight of a really hot guy she finds out that his name is Rick and he is the cemetery caretaker and she feels an instant connection to him (no, not one of those types of connections but a real one based off of memories that keep popping up in her head of him - memories she doesn't quite understand) She settles into her house, working on her self esteem and saving her money up to move (the cemetery totally creeps her out) and things should pretty much be getting back to normal for her by now except they're anything but. She soon comes to learn that her house is haunted by several ghosts, one of who is Logan, another sexy guy....er ghost with his own dark secrets. Soon sparks fly between Grateful, Logan and Rick. She feels bound to Rick by forces greater than herself plus she thinks he's totally hot but Logan is the perfect roommate. He cooks, he cleans and he's pretty much quite as a ghost most of the time. There's only one problem. Neither Rick nor Logan seem to care for the other. Both tell her not to trust the other one and as more and more weird events start to happen around the cemetery and dark forces from an ancient evil make themselves known Grateful finds out more than she bargained for. Will she be up to the challenge? Who will she choose? The Ghost or the Graveyard? You'll have to read to find out!

I got this one for free and read it a while back and I have to say I really enjoyed it. The Ghost and the Graveyard takes the same old thing: witches, vampires, demons and good vs. evil yet manages to put a brand new twist on them. Most of the story takes place around Grateful's new house and the cemetery that surrounds it but there's plenty going on. Basically it was just a fun read, not too heavy nor too light. Not too serious yet serious enough. Not too sexy yet plenty sexy. The book rode a good middle ground for me and I'm looking forward to the next one in the series.

I really wasn't sure if I was going to like this one and quite a few reviews seemed to not care much for the ending but I didn't feel that it really left everything in the air. The book had a self contained story yet left more for later. It wasn't near as bad as some books I've read that felt more like a prequel than an actual book and just stops right when things are getting good. Sure things are still a bit open and there is more to come but the major storyline wrapped up nicely and I felt it had the proper ending. I'd very much recommend reading this one. Heck, it's free so if you don't like it then no harm done but chances are if you're looking for a bit of the supernatural with a different twist to them then you'll find this book a refreshing change. I know I did. Give it a shot, sit back and have some fun.

A good, quick read that held my attention, though perhaps not enough to make me rush out to read the next book.

The Ghost and the Graveyard (Knight Games #1)
by Genevieve Jack (Goodreads Author), Brittany Pressley (Narrator)
I read this book as ebook before but I got the next couple of books in the series so I decided to re-read it by listening to it. I forgot how good it was. A witch reincarnated in a gal

that moves in by a cemetery. The caretaker is smoking hot and more than a caretaker. The house is not empty, there are souls already there. It is a great a sexy fantasy. It also has vampires, ghouls and more.
The narrator is great and makes the story even better! I gave the novel 4 stars before but 5 stars with the audible.

The Ghost in the Graveyard by Genevieve Jack
Knight Games series #1. Paranormal romance on the edge of erotica. Cliffhanger.
Grateful Knight moves to the small town of Red Grove and an unusual house at the edge of a graveyard. She meets a hot man on the way into town and immediately is fantasizing
Show More
about being with him. She finds out Rick is way more than expected and he says connected to her from more than just her current life. A ghost in the house warns her about Rick but the ghost has his own agenda. Magic is everywhere and Grateful’s life will never go back to ordinary.

Super steamy hot with magic and creatures and past lives all mixed together. I felt a bit like a ping pong ball keeping up with new introductions of paranormal, people, and how it all connects to Grateful. I didn’t expect the Luke twist in the last quarter but won’t give more details. I will say that Grateful handles it all with surprising acceptance. I would have been out of there!

I liked other series a bit better by this author. This was certainly one of her earlier works.

Welcome to another round of "I'm So Torn!". On the one hand I was really digging the story here. Grateful makes enough of an impression that her immediate lust for Rick can be overlooked since, well she acknowledges her bad decision making skills and the need to tone it back. The mystery
Show More
surrounding the creepy happenings at her new house kept me reading and while I wasn't particularly fond of either guy (for reasons I'll explain) neither one seemed like a complete Alphahole.

So far so good!

And then we get to the explanation part of who Rick is, who Grateful is (was/could be/whatever), her place in the universe and oh yeah the TRUTH behind her life.

Firstly - the whole plot with her father's dark secret surrounding her birth didn't feel needed. I see why Jack had it as part of the story--it helped to bridge connections with another character's motivations--yet how disturbing to hear such (even if it was a completely normal and unfortunately frequent emotional response).

Secondly - Rick goes from mysterious sex on a stick graveyad caretaker who seems a little bit too interested in Grateful (though not in a creepy stalker way) to...well being kind of creepy. You find out that he was married to various previous incarnations of Grateful through the centuries; she's a reincarnated piece of his beloved's soul and they are stronger together then apart...also he is severely weakened without her love/sex/blood. Soon as the cat is out of the bag he is suddenly like 'And to solve all our problems marry me!' and POUTS and SULKS every time she reasonably states its not a good idea. He basically uses her intense physical response against her as perfectly rational reasoning.

Thirdly - Logan goes from being a 'aw poor puppy!' to 'dear lord could you be more suffocating?' fairly quickly. Granted Grateful sees what is going on and understands that she can't just...keep him as her ghostly servant/emotional support, so good on her for recognizing it was a bad idea. By the time his ah lingering spirit problem is figured out I was ready to smack him, bury him and hand Grateful over to her scheming, manipulative ex (its bad when the guy who stole your money is the less evil of the men you know).

Fourthly - its a spoiler the ghost sex with Logan was SUPER CREEPY. SUPER DUPER 100% CREEPY. That could just be me though, I've never been into the whole 'my lover is a phantasm of energy/smoke/mist' genere of paranormal romances, but it seems pretty popular.

And while I admire the fact that Grateful stood up and said 'Hey stop deciding my life for me!', its kind of a moot point given the circumstances of Rick staying powerful enough to defeat the creepies involve her. I also felt like Logan's resolution should have been given a bit more time--a lot happens at the end and the mystery of him is kind shoehorned in between figuring out the bad guy's motivations and saving all of humanity.
