A little twee, but very cute concept. I know nothing about Black Canary, but it was all clear enough without.

A bit mild, clunky and generic, but this one line near the end as things became super ridiculous just made me laugh my head off for a very long time: "You became a middle school teacher just to get revenge on my mother?" Intentional or not, it made my day, so bonus star for you, Cabot.

Mag Cabot is such a wonderful writer and now she has expanded her skill to the graphic market in this fun and fast paced adventure. Here readers meet Black Canary. Thus the beginning adventure of young teen and the origin of her transformation. What middle grade reader can’t identify with

that?

Dinah Lance and her band mates Vee and Kat are preparing for the Gotham City Junior High battle of the bands when her father, Detective Lance, bursts in to announce that the Joker is loose again. Again? Just a day in Gotham city!
This announcement makes an impression on the three girls who vow to make a difference. For example, Dinah wants to sign up for the Gotham City Junior Police Academy. Now the fun really begins...
Soon, the trio notices that when Dinah gets emotional and yells, glass breaks, among other strange occurrences. Now Diana us spending a lot of time in trouble and with the principal. Her parents now must reveal that she has a superpower, a “sonic canary cry.” Dinah begins to juggle her desires to keep her secret and to keep her friends.

If you are familiar with manga-art, you may recognize the inspiration. The lavender-heavy palette is very pleasing to the eye and creates excitement.
This is a quick read involving some edgy, admirable girls all decked out in punk rock attire. Ages 8–12

I love this character. I normally tell people that DC has the best villians and Marvel has the best super heroes, I am changing my tune after this book. I want Meg Cabot to write more about the Black Canary. I want to know more about her friends and her life as an undercover hero just trying to

make it through middle school. The story was fast pace, but it left nothing out. I hope to see more of this hero from this author.
