These volumes are designed as introductory texts for undergraduate courses in maritime history, the age of exploration, and the 18th century. This series of essays, developed from an NEH Summer Institute in Early Modern Maritime History at the John Carter Brown Library, is designed to summarize recent interpretations in this field, introducing students to the wider literature.
