I finished this book at 2am last night. My eyes are puffy and swollen this morning but well worth it. I loved this book! I cried I think the last quarter of the book. I just had to finish it. 5 GIANT STARS from me. So far this is my favorite book of the year! Let me just say I’m an emotional
Show More
reader. I can cry at any sad scene but this book broke my heart. I felt so drawn to Sky’s character she was such a strong women and I loved her. I was pulled in from the very beginning and was dreading a little when Holder was showing that he was a little stalker-ish and had a temper. I don’t relate well to those kind of male characters and I tend to be a bit harsh on my ratings if I don’t think the lead guy is all that worthy of my heroine. Sky stood her ground with Holder and didn’t put up with his crap and let him know he was in the wrong. I loved that Sky didn’t just run into his arms even though she wanted too. As the story progressed the more Holder grew on me and by the middle of the book I think I was just as infatuated with him as Sky was. There were times I found the story a little bit predictable I knew things that would happen in the near future. They did happen just not how I was expecting them. I loved it and it will be a book that I will remember for a very long time!

I absolutely loved this story. The characters were well developed. The story line was believable. The author did a great job of making the reader feel the depth of the emotion and what the characters were going through. I also felt the author did a fantastic job at revealing information at just the
Show More
right time impacting the reader in a tangible way. I truly felt what the characters were feeling and going through.

Hopeless is just one of those books that grabs a hold of your heart and leaves you with so many emotions. I have never loved a fictional couple so much before. Their relationship was so real and beautiful and I just wanted everything to work out for them the whole time.

Going into this book I
Show More
though it would be just another contemporary teen romance but it was so much more than that. The trials and tribulations that the main character and those she loves have to go through is really heartbreaking and so real. Every single character in the book brought a lot to the story and I loved that. You fall in love with all of them and hope that they all turn out alright.

The writing and the plot of the story were both so good. I was completely engrossed in the story and couldn't put it down. The beginning is kind of calm and nice and then the plot picks up and starts to get intricate and it's so hard to put down. I loved this book so much and it is definitely and new favorite for me. I highly recommend this book and can not wait for the next one to come out soon.

Holy hell.

You know how most books are so predictable that you are just waiting for the words to read like you pretty much figure they will?

Yeah?

Well this book is in no way predictable.

Completely surprising.
Absolutely stunning.
Terrifically heartbreaking.

When I started this book.. one word came to mind...intense. I couldn't understand the intense relationship. of Sky and Holder until the twist. This book is written beautifully. You feel every feeling and emotion. I loved it!'

Why do we choose to forget things? Things so horrifying they must be known. Why do we choose to forget and never remember why or what or how?

Sky was always a strange girl. I could tell from the very beginning that there was something more to her. She was completely and utterly hopeless and she
Show More
didn't seem to know why.

She participated in activities because it felt good not to feel. And if you take the time to think about that. It's pretty smart. If you can't feel than you don't feel the loss or the pain or the sadness.

Sky doesn't even know about her past but she does in a way. Because you can never forget. You're not allowed to forget.

But the past catches up with you eventually. And you have to face it soon enough which is exactly what this book is about. Holder, one of the main characters being the beginning of the past catching up with her.

From the very beginning the past was happening all around her but she still pushed it away and she didn't even know.

This is the story about a girl Sky who never knew her biological parents. A girl who is completely and utterly hopeless

Let's see if that can change in this emotionally traumatizing book. One of the best books ever written.

2.5 stars. Passes the time, but lacks narrative impetus and structure. Rambling first person thoughts of someone who misses things that are glaringly obvious. There's no real mystery, no narrative pain and because of that there is no real character development. When you know exactly where these
Show More
characters are headed after their second interaction, you are just biding your time, reading her internal struggles, waiting for them to catch up to you. It's boring. It's the opposite of intellectual. It's passive reading. And I simply do not like it.

Holder is a nice enough character, but he seems a mishmash of a million different heroic stereotypes. Brooding self-rebuke. All consuming, singular passion for Sky. You know he'll never stray. They'll be in love forever. He'll heal her. She'll heal him. I can't be the only one who finds this 1:1 romantic ratio boring.

Karen and her role in Sky's life was another obvious trope. See The Language of Flowers for a complicated, similar relationship that leaves you guessing.

This gets a half an extra star above "it was ok" for being SLIGHTLY better than this author's other books, which were embarrassingly sappy pap. But I really should remove it because only Sherlock Holmes can DEDUCE someone to tears. Pretty sure everyone else is REDUCED there.

I bought this e-book because it was cheap, I wanted something fluffy, and people LOVED it. It was a fast read, and I didn't hate it, but these are the most utterly unrealistic characters I've ever encountered. Without exception, every one of them is forthright and super-communicative, even the ones
Show More
who are revealed as having been long-term liars in the past? And the characters who experience extreme trauma are still super-well-adjusted? Sexual abuse survivor can still have hot, in-love sex after trying only, like, two times? And everybody talks about their feelings and then cries and then they're fine?

Also? None of these teenagers talk like teenagers. I get that some of the people who read this book want to believe in some fantasyland, hardcore romantical stuff, but the lovey-dovey dialogue is utterly cheeseball. Read the other reviews if you don't believe me. If you can make a desktop wallpaper out of the quote, you might have the emotional maturity of a thirteen-year old girl.

If you liked this book, that's cool...but would you mind telling me where you got such awesome kool-aid? I feel lonely and kind of ashamed that I let myself be duped into reading this teen romance novel.

I really, really want to hate you all for loving this book so much that I had to read it and had my heart broken so often that I stopped counting. Writing this I’m at 84% of this book and it took me almost an hour to read the previous 10% because the letters kept blurring from all the tears.

At
Show More
35% I was sure what would be a part of this story, so I had a some time to brace myself and it didn’t help one bit because I just can’t seem to stop crying since I hit around 74%.

The characters are unique and just so damn loveable. Sky found the strength to face her worst fears when her world was breaking down around her and I’ve got no idea how that is even possible – I probably would’ve crumbled.

Holder is simply too amazing for words. He means so well and carries so much guilt for things that aren’t his fault. Every time the guilt starts up, I want to shake him and yell that it isn’t his fault that these monsters aren’t only fiction but do actually exist in reality. He always knows what to say and when to say it and I really wish that every teenage boy would be like him.

And slutty Six, what can I say? Quirky, funny and a seriously awesome friend. Just like Breckin.

Colleen Hoover knows how to spin a breathtaking story, there’s humor, friendship and love but also moments so horrifying that I wish I could’ve clawed my eyes out after reading them.

I’m still unaware of the actual ending and as much as I wish I could hate you all for making me read this, I can’t because this is a hauntingly beautiful story and I wish I could castrate every single person doing this to a child. Rape is one of the vilest things existing on earth but doing this to a child who doesn’t even have the mental capacity to understand what is happening is beyond disgusting – I wish I could think of a word stronger than disgust but my mind seems to be fried. A child who looks at his/her parents in all its innocence and thinks that their personal heroes can’t possibly do any wrong, should never have to live through this. Never.

There are many more things I want to say, but I’ll save that for tomorrow when I slept over this one and had time to recover my ability to write at least halfway comprehensible sentences instead of this mad rambling.

-------------------------------

A day after finishing this and crying myself to sleep, it's still hard to gather my thoughts. The flashbacks are the hardest part of this story, each and every one of them made me feel like I was just gutted.

"Will you promise me that when he makes you sad, you'll think about the sky?"

There are so many good parts in this book but this one is my favorite lines. These are the kinds of promises you'll never forget, and Sky doesn't, she just doesn't remember for a long time why she likes the sky so much.

"Sometimes you have to choose between a bunch of wrong choices and no right ones. You just have to choose which wrong choice feels the least wrong."

Like usual Holder is spot on. Karen may not have done the right thing but she did a good thing and I can't say that I blame her. Her actions saved the life of someone innocent and even if it wasn't the right choice, it was still teh best thing she could've done in my eyes.

"He reaches his hand out on the concrete between us and wraps his pinky around mine."

Reaching this part, my emotions were already so raw that this sentence brought another round of tears. Not because it was so sad but because I realized that, despite all, they still had their firsts and some of them even twice.

I can't explain the emotion that last sentence evoked but I want to remember it for a long time and I'm sure that not only this feeling but the whole story will be on my mind for a long time as well.

I don't think there are enough great words in the dictionary to describe this book!!! Colleen Hoover is a writing genius!! If I could rate this story a 10 star read, I WOULD! I LOVE IT and that's putting it mildly! Simply PHENOMENAL! After reading Hopeless, I'm HOPELESS! This book will knock you
Show More
socks off and leave you speechless. This book is the epitome of PERFECTION! My life has been forever changes because of this book!

I have never been able to read any where close to an entire book in one day, but I came pretty darn close with this one! Once you start reading, Hoover draws you in and never lets you go.

This story was such an emotional roller coaster, yet even though parts of the story were gut wrenching, I found myself reading and smiling throughout the majority of the book. It is a story of unwavering unconditional true love and dives into the very core of your soul and bares all of your inner emotions that one may think should never surface.

I was very impressed with the continued correlation to the title throughout the entire story. Too often, stories may only have one sentence that references back to the title, however, the references started at the very beginning and followed clear through to the end!

The characters are in depth and so lovable. I would like to even clone a little Holder for myself.

I honestly don't think that I could ever read another book that I loved so much. Prior to reading this book I never dreamed of wanting to re-read a book, but I loved this book enough to want to read and read and re-read and re-read it again! I just can't get enough of Hopeless!

I'm going against the norm here. I finally decided I did not like the book. I'd say it had its moments and I can completely understand why people like it. But there is one major fault I just could not get over.

INCONSISTENCY

Inconsistency in Sky's personality.
Inconsistency in Holder's personality.
In
Show More
Sky's reactions.
In Holder's reactions.
In the time frame.
In the happenings.
In the plot.
In secondary characters.

There was so much inconsistency in the book I found myself facepalming myself loads of times. LIKE LOADS OF TIMES. But I finished it. I did. Why?

Because I have to hand it to this book for the shock factor. And the conflicting emotions it got in me. Colleen Hoover is a talented author and she has a great writing style. And I loved her Slammed. But her other books just couldn't measure up. In Hopeless too she writes beautifully but the cliches and the cheese factors are too much for me. As is the characters running hot and cold for reasons that make little sense. And the aforementioned inconsistency.

I tried to like this book, I really did. But it just didn't work for me.

Colleen Hoover is my new favorite author. I've never read a book that was so wonderful. The book centers around a senior in high school named Sky and her love interest, Holder. It's hard to describe the main characters because their personalities are so well written and complex. Sky and Holder were
Show More
funny and silly and heartbreaking and tragic and lovely. Sky is a wonderful main character. She's funny, sarcastic, and her imperfections are endearing. She knows she's not perfect, but she accepts herself. Sky, Holder, and Sky's two best friends are far from perfect. They're honest to a fault and flawed in their own ways, but they're exactly the kind of people Sky needs in her life. I couldn't put this book down. I'm so glad that Sky and Holder's story will continue in book 2.

"Hopeless" is a novel you will not forget even after finishing it. Sky is 17 and Holder is 18. Hold on to that because throughout this wonderful young adult novel, you will see that their horrific backgrounds left them making adult decisions about life as it comes at them full force.
Holder is
Show More
unique. I wish most 18 year old boys behaved as he did, mature and wise beyond his age. A non-kiss was the most chaste, romantic, emotional encounter between tweens that I've ever read and I was hooked. Of course, this is a novel, but written by author Colleen Hoover in such a way that page after page, the reader is living the plot. Memories from the past are brought up, even as Sky tries to bury them. Holder has his own secrets, and between them, trust issues surface. Telling more would ruin the reader's joy in finding out the secrets, the mysteries that abound and how they are handled by two strong characters.
I love books that twist and turn and "hopeless" did just that. Love and survival, hope and healing, life and death, tragedy and staying strong. A victim, yet a survivor. All were there and I dare I say it, ideal for movie rights to be bought and sold. I'll be first in line at the theater.
I recommend this book for all ages and plan to give it as a gift to my granddaughters. With a prayer that they meet "their " own Holder.

Good story but the grammatical errors and the way it ended knocked it down to 3 stars. I did like that I wasn't sure how it was going to end until over 1/2 way through the book. I like books that keep me guessing. Saying that as soon as I got a little further in I had the end figured out. I didn't
Show More
want to read any more and quickly skimmed the rest of the book to see if I was right. It's a pretty long book and I read it in one day. That should tell you something. This won't turn me off from reading anything else by the author, but I hope she doesn't rush the endings of all her books. (less)

Hopeless is one of the first New Adult books I've read - the Slammed series by the same author, which I"ve also read, is either YA or New Adult - and if it's anything to go by, it's a genre I'm going to have to pay attention to.

While there is definitely some content in Hopeless that isn't that
Show More
appropriate for younger readers, the age of the characters, that they're in high school and what they're experiencing keeps things more relevant and relatable for older teen/young adult readers. New Adult as an idea and a genre is a great bridge between younger teenage characters and situations and adult characters, Hopeless executing it very well.

If you've read Slammed, some of the same themes or situations seem to be used in Hopeless (backgrounds of characters, situations). They're used so differently and with such different characters, though, that it doesn't feel like anything's being repeated (ie it may be noticed that this character was in foster care and so was that one). I actually liked how vastly different two stories could be with some of the same elements.

If they're present in everything she writes, I may - may - feel differently.

Despite the story being from Sky's point-of-view, I had no trouble at all connecting with or relating to Holder's character. His interactions with Sky, what he shares with her, and her observations of him really made him feel like as just a full character as Sky, the narrator.

At times the plot seemed to be going somewhere predictable, that the reader was going to be able to guess everything ahead of the characters. I liked that things didn't quite unfold that way. Things weren't simple but they stayed true to the characters, who they were and what they needed. Even when things got darker - or perhaps more so then - the story stayed very real.

It's usually more science fiction or dystopian novels that leave me thinking after they're over but sometimes a really good contemporary fiction leaves me thinking about it - and its characters - after I've finished. Hopeless is one of those books. I'm excited to let you know what I think about the follow-up, Losing Hope!

Hopeless is just....WOW. I really don't know how to put all of the emotions that I got from reading this book into words. I think its impossible. I've been putting of writing a review because I needed to cool off my emotions for a few days, if I wrote the review right away...it would of been crazy,
Show More
probably just one sentence over and over again "I LOVE THIS BOOK!! I LOVE THIS BOOK!! I LOVE THIS BOOK!!" I do love this book....a lot. I live it soo much. Definitely one of my favorites now. I'm just mad at myself for not reading it a lot sooner!

What really got me in Hopeless....everything. Everything was amazing in this book. The plot, was mind blowing! I loved every page, every word, every little secret, every twist, especially twists, I'm a sucker for an awesome, unpredictable twists. The story is not as light as it might seem if you read a book description. It's actually a lot darker. It's a story that will captivate you, and leave you breathless after reading it. The story that will make you cry and laugh. A story that you can't miss!

The characters were amazing! The kind of characters that you just can't help but love! Sky was probably one of the best characters I have ever read about! She is funny, strong, sarcastic (there is no awesome character without a little sarcasm), she is just that kind of character that is very well developed. The character that you learn about, more and more through out the story. Holder is also the guy you can't help but fall in love with. He is just the kind of a mysterious bad boy..at fist. Wait till you get to know him...prepare to be swept off your feet ladies(;

“When I touch you, I’m touching you because I want to make you happy. When I kiss you, I’m kissing you because you have the most incredible mouth I’ve ever seen and you know I can’t not kiss it. And when I make love to you—I’m doing exactly that. I’m making love to you because I’m in love with you.”

I honestly can't and don't want to write a lot about this book, because you definitely have to read it, and find out everything for yourself. I know, I'm sorry for being so evil. Hahaha!!
I would also recommend not to read spoilers about this book, because trust me you really don't want to find out everything before reading the book, it will just ruin it. So stay away from spoilers! If you haven't read this book yet...read it. Take a day off and read it! Trust me when you start, you won't be able to put it down.

P.S: Collen Hoover....how do you do it? What is a secret for writing such an amazing book? You are seriously an incredible writer. Thank you for such an amazing book!

I read this book based on a friend recommendation and she did not steer me wrong! I LOVED IT!
1. The plot. It has everything you could want in it and more. From secrets to lies, this plot will have you at the edge of your seat…literary!
2. No insta-love. Yup, that’s right. You get a story of two
Show More
characters with a past that has been hidden from them. You get to explore every part of their relationship as they come to the conclusion of love and friendship.
3. Back Round history. The back round history of characters is what makes this story. The past is harsh and has so much drama in it you can’t help but loose yourself in the story cause of it. The moment that little bomb of what really happens will make you loose you head.
4. It’s addicting From the start of the story, as the reader you began to question motives and actions. Like,”Why is he mad?” “What’s he hiding?” And you can’t help but keep reading cause you NEED TO KNOW. Once in the story, you are compelled to finish.
5. The ending. GAH! The ending is so amazingly good that you are in awe that you just read the book. I couldn’t believe that it finished and when I was done I wanted nothing more but to re-read it again.
Hopeless is a glorious, amazing book that will leave you stunned! The clever world building colliding with lies is exhilarating. Blindsided by a jaw-dropping plot, Hopeless is spectacular!

Hopeless by Colleen Hoover is the first book in the Hopeless series. This book is the story of how Sky met and fell in love with Holder, of secrets (his and hers) and how revealing them is more painful than any one of them imagined.

A beautiful story with a devastatingly painful twist, this book
Show More
will draw you in and keep you guessing along with your characters all the way until the reveal. This was light-hearted and funny in parts and heart-breaking in others. Sky is quirky and different and Holder is misunderstood and deeper than most people are aware.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, even with all the angst. Just be prepared with tissues and chocolate when reading, there will be a few spots you'll need both.

This is definitely a must read for any romance/new adult reader.

Fuck all the firsts, Sky. The only thing that matters to me with you are the forevers.
-Holden

He pulls me to him and I let him. He feels safe. He feels like home when I’m wrapped up in him. He holds me and rubs my back, kissing the side of my head every now and then. He keeps saying, “Don’t worry,” over and over and he holds me for what feels like forever.

Colleen Hoover already earned reputation that she knows how to write a good romance story with her novels Slammed and Point of Retreat. My first encounter with her is Hopeless, first book in her new contemporary romance series, about hopeless boy and girl who somehow manage to find love
Show More
together.

Seventeen-year-old Sky is not the usual heroine. She’s got a reputation of being a slut, is home-schooled and lives with a mother who is against technology. Yes that means no tv, phones, computers etc. Sky at first glance is definitely not someone who I could easily connect or relate to. But very soon she earned my admiration and respect, mostly thanks to how she reacts to slut-shaming directed at her. It’s always good reading about a strong, self-confident character.

Although she had a lot of relationships, Sky is cold and distant toward the boys. They do not faze her. That is, until she meets Dean Holder. When Sky looked at him, she never wanted to stop. And when Holder looked at her…
"There was something so disturbing about the way he looked at me. It was uncomfortable, embarrassing, and somehow flattering all at once."

A list of reasons why Sky should not be attracted to Holder is mile long. He’s got a temper, he’s moody, he’s full of secrets… But still, everything about him feels right. If you liked the instant attraction and intensity of romance between Romeo and Juliet, if you liked the drama of Beautiful Disaster, then Hopeless is going to rock your world.

"He’s touching my face. His hand is on my cheek. I can’t think, I can’t speak, I can’t breathe. The intensity that exudes from his whole existence sucks the air out of my lungs and the strength out of my knees."

At first, I was swept by the emotions and romance between Sky and Holder, but as the story developed and secrets from their past started to get revealed, the story kinda went downhill for me. It all seemed so unbelievable, like a plotline of some telenovela. But I think I will be a lonely black sheep in my little corner, since this book is insanely popular and has 4.51 rating on Goodreads with 76.124 reviews.

IN THE END…
Hopeless is one of those contemporary romance stories full of drama that will make you tingle with the intensity of emotions. If you don’t mind your book to be crammed with teenage hormones and to be a little bit over the top, I think you are going to enjoy it. Think of it like a cocktail of dramatic flare from Beautiful Disaster and deeply-flawed characters from Pushing the Limits.

Wow pretty much sum's this book up for me.

(I should have just stayed up and finished it)
Author Colleen Hoover really thought of everything even down to the name of the book "Hopeless" which really was clever. This emotional ride is heart wrenching and
Show More
warming at the same time. Horrible acts happened but the bond between two people only got stronger as all the secrets came out. There were parts of the book that I was thinking what the hell was Holder
doing but as their story progressed everything made sense. A lot going on in this book a page turn all the way through.
No raunchy sex, some tender love making.
My heart was full of love with this one.

Quotes:

"I went from wanting to lick his dimples to wanting to get the hell away form him."

"My body is a damn traitor."

"I expect one of them to at least ask Six why she attacked me, but they don't. This just goes to show how much they love her. They wouldn't even care if she beat me up, they'd tell me

This book is dark and emotionally retching. The romance is deep, complicated and desperate. Their connection and affection is not hot as much as a way to heal for both of them.

Hopeless is a very sad and haunting tale. So sad and haunting that I found it difficult to read or enjoy.

I wanted to read Hopeless because I love NA, and I have heard so many great reviews about it. So, when I saw it for free on amazon about a month ago, I knew that I had to get it, and my trip to NJ provided some time in my reading schedule that I could get to it.
I was not disappointed. I loved
Show More
Sky's character even though I was a bit confused by the opening. I was yearning to know what was going on and it took us back so that we could piece together what led her and Holder to that moment. Sky has some unique relationships all around and that kept things interesting. Her adoptive mom Karen is strict on no-technology and then very lenient in others, and I love the way they are together, just accepting but still Karen wanting the best for Sky. Sky and her best friend from next door have this friendship where they love and support each other even if they may not necessarily agree with the other's choices. Six, the above mentioned best friend, sleeps with a lot of guys and has gotten quite a negative name for herself, which makes me so infuriated--guys can do whatever and sleep or say they sleep with all kinds of girls and its okay, but women get judged and I think that its an important issue that they talk about.
Holder is infuriating at times, and so sweet, thoughtful and considerate at others. Sky just doesn't blindly accept his mood swings though, she knows that he has a dark past and she knows part of it about his sister. They also share the bond of rumors about them both going around of which, not all of it or none of it is true. They feel this deep connection though and they talk about so much and try to always be honest with each other, but some things are hard to talk about and they cover that well.

They have an undeniable chemistry and sexual tension between them, and I love every second of it. Knowing that Sky feels numb when kissing most boys, Holder really takes that aspect slowly. Especially kissing on the lips, kissing other places is def okay, and we see that he makes Sky feel things. Sexy things. Romantic things. Lustful things. But they never really get as explicit as most NA, so I think that makes a good transition if you've never read an NA before and used to just kisses or fade to black in YA.
I really appreciate how they don't jump to saying I love you, and admit that they aren't there but still want to acknowledge that its deep and they haven't really felt that before.
The more we learn about Holder though and see his actions at times, the more that I want to know about what he hasn't told yet.
The secret that finally came out was def unique and shocking, but little clues and some of her dreams and the timing led me to believe something similar. I just couldn't piece together the details and man were they amazing and so well thought out. I can't imagine being in a similar situation for any of them or what I would have done.

Bottom Line: Powerful and romantic NA.

I don't understand the hype of this book. It's so touchy feely, it makes you feel slightly nauseous. It's predictable and far too drawn out. I've read some crap books this year and this is another one I'd throw onto the steaming heap of turdish books.

Holder is constantly touching Sky's face. Now I

don't really understand face groping, Personally I'd be worried about spots. Next he has reddish hair, nice! Multiple personalities ranging from deranged to sickeningly sweet. But that's ok because he's "passionate"!
The other problem (believe me I had lots of problems with this book) was how easily it was for Sky to accept being raped night after night. She still had love for the person that did that to her without therapy because she's oh so strong. She forgave him because she remembered one let me repeat ONE memory of affection from the age of 0 to 3 yrs! What utter bollocks!

Why are so many people giving this a high rating? It doesn't make any sense! The only thing it could possibly be is the idea of Holder who had sex with Sky the very same day she realised she had been molested repeatedly as a child. Go Holder!
