Description

Fantasy. Fiction. HTML: Accountant turned professional monster hunter, Owen Zastava Pitt, managed to stop the nefarious Old One's invasion plans last year, but as a result made an enemy out of one of the most powerful beings in the universe. Now an evil death cult known as the Church of the Temporary Mortal Condition wants to capture Owen in order to gain the favor of the great Old Ones. The Condition is led by a fanatical necromancer known as the Shadow Man. The government wants to capture the Shadow Man and has assigned the enigmatic Agent Franks to be Owen's full time bodyguard, which is a polite way of saying that Owen is monster bait. With supernatural assassins targeting his family, a spy in their midst, and horrific beasties lurking around every corner, Owen and the staff of Monster Hunter International don't need to go hunting, because this time the monsters are hunting them. Fortunately, this bait is armed and very dangerous... At the publisher's request, this title is sold without DRM (Digital Rights Management). Lexile Score: 700.… (more)

This is the second book in the Monster Hunter International (MHI) series by Correia. It was a great book and, like the first book, is kind of like three books all in one. I listened to it on audiobook and the audiobook was extremely well done. If you like audiobooks I highly recommend listening to
Show More
this on audiobook. I did listen to it at 1.5x because the narrator read a bit slower than I liked.

Owen Pitt is enjoying a bit of down time and enjoying hanging out with his fellow monster hunter and fiance' Julie. Of course that is when things go bad. Owen is attacked by a Shadowman and then the Feds get involved. The Feds want to use Owen as bait to draw out a cult of Old One worshippers call the Condition. The Old One wants Owen dead and he's sent his whole cult after Owen to ensure it happens. In between dodging evil monsters only known as Violence and Force, and trying to root out a MHI traitor, Owen may just have to save the whole world...again.

Like the first book this book was kind of like three books smooshed together. The first part of the book mainly deals with Owen hunting down Violence and Force and destroying them. In this part his brother, and rockstar, Mosh (yes Mosh Pitt) gets involved. The second part goes through them rooting out the traitor in MHI. The third part is where they hunt down the leader of the Condition. The three main stories are woven together well, no part is really separate from the rest and the book isn't actually broken into parts.

Like the first book the action is non-stop, there are tons of guns, lots of gallows humor, and tons of kick-butt fight scenes. Don't worry, it's not all action. There is an epic storyline here involving Owen and his involvement with the Old Ones. The storyline gets expanded even more as we meet Owen's dad and find out some of reasoning behind Owen's brutal upbringing. Owen and Julie are both drawn even deeper into the struggle between our world and the Other world.

It was great to get so much more background on Owen. We meet his family and find out more about Owen's upbringing. We also get a lot of background on the Shackleford's (Julie and her father, mother, and grandfather). There is a lot of history that was hinted at in the first book that really clicks into place in this novel.

There is less gun-speak in this book than in the first book. Whether that is good or bad depends on the reader. Although I love my weapons and guns, I found the first book to be a bit overwhelming with all the gun-talk in there. There are still a ton of weapons and descriptions of weapons in this story, but it was at a good level. It was interesting, but didn't take over the story. This is a book for adults; there is a lot of swearing and a lot of gore and violence (no sex though).

Overall I absolutely loved this book. The world and story are broadened a lot, we learn a ton more about our characters background too. The action is non-stop and the monsters kick-butt (as do the Hunters). I love how Correia wraps things up nicely but then also introduces some mysterious elements that seriously broaden the story. The story is creative, well thought out, and just absolutely a fun and engaging read. I highly recommend for urban fantasy fans who like high octane action in their book. I can't wait to read the next book, Monster Hunter Alpha.

a lot of this book was actually pretty funny, and i absolutely loved the character of Franks. The plot surprisingly had some decent twists. I liked the telepathic flashes way better than the dream sequences. After meeting G-nome, I kind of worry as to what the author is going to do the rest of the

fantasy races, though I kind of look forward to meeting his version of Dwarves for some reason. There were a few inconsistencies...so we've previously seen that a vampires bite is pretty much there tearing into an artery...that person is very likely going to die. yet, after attempting to turn her daughter, her daughter does not die. turn or no, that should have killed her. i'll probably read the next one fairly soon. same as the first one, if your a fantasy/horror buff, with an emphasis on horror, you'll probably enjoy it.

I actually enjoyed Vendetta more than the first book, maybe because I'm starting to get used to the characters and the style of the writing, but also mostly because in this second book the action has been dialed up and the stakes have been raised.

The Monster Hunter International books fall squarely
Show More
in my "fluff" pile when it comes to reading, i.e. it's like junk food for your mind. You'll get plenty of cliches, humor, and pop culture references, the kind you would expect from this kind of urban fantasy. In other words, it's a fun ride. Fans of the Dresden Files will probably want to check this out too, though be forewarned that our protagonist and narrator Owen Zastava Pitt is a whole different kind of animal.

Despite my earlier comment about cliches, I have to hand it to Correia -- some of the main story elements might be predictable, but the guy has absolutely no qualms about doing anything he wants to his characters. This does lead to a bit of suspense because you can never predict what might happen to the main players.

I'm sorry to say that as much it looks like pulp fiction brain candy, I enjoyed it none the less. It was fast, fun, and intelligent (as much as shoot, blowing up, hacking, and generally destroying zombies, vampires, monsters, and Cthulu can be).

And, of course, it was WAY over the top. What's not to

love?

Better than the first Monster Hunter book. A lot more things are happening and the author does well in keeping you intrested. I struggled to put the book down, I just had to know what would happen next! A very nice final battle. The series is starting to reminded me of the Dresden books, which is

high praise

Larry Correia is the new Jim Butcher. He'd be the new and improved Jim Butcher if there wasn't so much swearing in the books.

This book is easily five stars, and I'm stoked for the next one.

As with the first one, a really good, fun read!

I really wanted to give this 5 stars. It was so much fun to read! It reminds me in some weird way of a Stephanie-Plum-like novel for men. Maybe it was just that Agent Franks reminded me of Ranger. Sometimes I really wondered if he actually was, like he somehow got assigned to this case, and he told
Show More
Stephanie he had been sent on a dangerous, prolonged mission and he wouldn't be back for a while. I can hear you thinking that it's just fiction, so that can't have happened, but my brain seems not to be aware of that detail when I read. Anyway, it was like a dessert buffet with one fun treat after another. Honestly, he is a great writer. Very good with characters. My only complaint, and hence the 4 stars, is too many climaxes. I got desensitized to them to the point that I wanted everyone to just die already. But I will definitely keep on reading!

Good character development, storyline, & plot. Z and the crew face off against evil forces once again. The government is shady. Frank's true nature is revealed. We also meet Z's family.

Monsters, big guns, a traitor, the return of the elder gods from beyond space. Gratuitous violence and a world-ending plot. Excellent book....lots of ideas, interesting critters, and a powerful, sympathetic hero. Recommended second entry to the series. Can't wait to read the rest.

That was fun!

This is a great series. There's definitely some language in this book (though, it seemed less than the first one).

Pitt and MHI find themselves facing the past in order to save the future. Pitt goes through hell and back again to save the world from the old ones again. We learn more about some of
Show More
the other characters in the cast in this book, and it makes us want to spend even more time with them.

I caught myself laughing quite a bit with this one. I loved the "Troll" character, and how he spoke. I listened to the audible version, and that probably helped. The jokes were awesome.

All in all, a great book if you like supernatural (the show) type scenes/banter. Great stuff!

Monster Hunter Vendetta is a guilty pleasure. Urban fantasy mixed with gun love and likable characters made for a fun read. It is over the top with an accountant who becomes a professional monster hunter in a world that officially denies (and covers up any evidence of) monsters. There are enough
Show More
references to the Cthulu mythos that I kept my fascination throughout. I found myself snickering throughout it.

Is it great literature? No. However, it is like those B-grade movies that demand a soda and popcorn while watching the non-stop action and root for the main character. You worry because the actor may get tired of the character and want the character to get killed off this time, but deep in your heart, you know there will be a sequel.

This series entry needs to be read in order after Monster Hunter International. And yes, I have the next book in the series. The series is recommended for those who like urban fantasy that isn't warm and fuzzy.
