Description

Sixteen-year-old Yara Silva has always known that ghosts walk alongside the living. Her grandma, like the other females in her family, is a Waker, someone who can see and communicate with ghosts. Yara grew up watching her grandmother taunted and scorned for this unusual ability and doesn¿t want that to be her future. She has been dreading the day when she too would see ghosts, and is relieved that the usually dominant Waker gene seems to have skipped her, letting her live a normal teenage life. However, all that changes for Yara on her first day at her elite boarding school when she discovers the gene was only lying dormant. She witnesses a dark mist attack Brent, a handsome fellow student, and rushes to his rescue. Her act of heroism draws the mist¿s attention, and the dark spirit begins stalking her. Yara finds herself entrenched in a sixty-year-old curse that haunts the school, threatening not only her life, but the lives of her closest friends as well. Yara soon realizes that the past she was trying to put behind her isn¿t going to go quietly.… (more)

Yara (and most of the other women in her family) is a Waker, that is one that can communicate with ghosts and aid them as needed. Sounds cool, right? not so much if you're a teenage girl in high school who happens to have no interest in this particular gift. Unfortunately for her....she may not

have a choice. In fact, her very life as well as that of a close personal friend may depend on the strength of her abilities in order to make things right. You see at Pendrell prep school things have gone horribly wrong and not in the "bad-grades-and-bad-hair-day" sorta way....more the top students taking their lives way but as in most cases things are not always as they seem.

In the world of YA, finding a book unique in storyline can be rather rough. You have a slew of books on all things that go bump in the night but one I haven't seen until now is right here in these pages. You learn of Yara's world as it is, as she wishes it to be and how it could be. You see the outcome of choices made and how even a small change can affect things on a larger scale. You get the good versus evil, the "you can do anything" empowerment, even the potential romance with each turn of the page and in unexpected ways. Recommended read for readers of the YA genre from teen through adult...if you're looking for an interesting storyline with a different slant on ghostly encounters, this may just be the right choice for you. Happy reading!

Yara is a Waker, someone who can see and talk to the dead. She can also make her spirit leave her body. When she saves Brent, a boy at the boarding school she is attending, she never in a million years thinks he would believe what she can do. But Brent tells her he too can make his spirit leave his

body, and he wants to help show her how to become stronger and teach her things to do as a spirit.
But Brent doesn't show up to their training session. And suddenly, he's acting different. He's yelling at his best friend, he's becoming an introvert, and he mouths off to Yara for the smallest things.
And that's when she starts receiving messages from a ghost. Messages of caution, telling her to stay away from Brent. She's never had this much contact with a ghost before, and when she tries to dig deeper to understand what the ghost is asking of her, things take a dangerous turn.
This book is kinda hard to review without giving major plot points away, so stay with me while I try here, you shouldn't miss out on this one.
We've all read a ghost story or two. There are scary ghosts, ghosts that are relatives, ghosts that are helpful, ghosts that can touch you, ghosts that can possess you. Well this...is not any of those. This book to me is a ghost book all on it's own, in it's own category and I'm in love with it.
There are so many twists, and honestly? I couldn't guess a single one. They were amazing! I actually gasped out loud at the biggest one, I cringed and I smiled at the same time.
Even though you've got people who talk to ghosts, people who are ghosts, people who want to see ghosts, etc., the characters seem so genuine. People you would want to be friends with in high school, people you could actually see yourself hanging out with.
And the love story is perfect. Never cheesy, never overpowering. It was a perfect addition to the story and I rooted for them all the way to the last page.
And can I just mention the beautiful cover for a second? Wow!
You've got an amazing story here. One you shouldn't miss. Read it, see what I mean, and spread the word about the originality of it all.

An original take on ghosts, the sweetest teen romance, a touch of mistery, believable characters that remain consistent throughout the book... really, what else do you need in a YA novel?

Intrinsical is the first book in the Yara Silva trilogy. I was initially drawn to this book by the striking cover and the intriguing premise. Intrinsical is a suspenseful and fast paced read and kept me up late reading. It is a scarier story than I had expected, and I realized it was not the best

idea to read this late at night. There is a steady level of tension in the book and some unexpected twists to keep your interest. The writing flowed nicely with plenty of detail and vivid descriptions.

As the protagonist, Yara is a strong heroine. She starts out lacking confidence, but the character shows growth throughout the book as she learns to live with her paranormal gift. Yara’s relationship with Brent is believable and builds slowly. She and Cherie have a strong friendship and make a good team researching the Pendrell curse.

The ghost story was the most compelling for me due to the surprises and the intricate plot. There are high stakes involved and a scary villain to defeat that kept me turning the pages. This story should appeal to fans of ghost stories and romance, and one that came to mind while I was reading this was Shadowed Summer. In the sequel I would be interested to learn more about the origin of Yara’s Waker gift, and find out more about her grandmother.

Per Goodreads, the next book of the series is titled Indelible and should be published in September of this year.
