This young adult fantasy is the tale of a young orphan boy that learns he is a young wizard and eligible to leave his abusive uncle's home to go to wizard school. The story is a series of adventures during his first year of school, culminating in defeating a sorcerer who is trying to revive the
Show More
evil Lord Voldemort. At the school, Harry makes friends with Ron and Hermione, fellow students, and several wizard teachers.

This book is charming in its simple writing style and depth of characters. The reader will find himself caring about Harry and his friends. Thankfully, this book is the first of a seven book series, so there are many more adventures to share with these young wizards.

The book has faced controversy because of the "occult" references of spells, amulets, wands, and demons. A teacher would need to use caution when presenting this book to students, but if approved, the teacher can use this book to discuss such broad messages as friendship, loyalty, perseverance, and resistance to temptation. Interestingly, the author has used Latin words for the root words in her "incantations" which could lead to a discussion of this language in a classroom setting during the reading of this book.

An orphan learns that he's a "wizard," and goes to a magic boarding school.

For the longest time I've remembered this movie as being a horrendous waste of time, but I suppose that was because I initially went in expecting greatness. Yesterday I went in expecting a horrendous waste of time, and was

surprised to find a harmless, almost pleasant, children's movie.

A film can never really replace a book but the first Harry Potter is good fun. And rewatching now so many years later it's "they all look SO young".

his is the tale of Harry Potter, an ordinary 11-year-old boy serving as a sort of slave for his aunt and uncle who learns that he is actually a wizard and has been invited to attend the Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry is snatched away from his mundane existence by Hagrid, the

grounds keeper for Hogwarts, and quickly thrown into a world completely foreign to both him and the viewer. Famous for an incident that happened at his birth, Harry makes friends easily at his new school. He soon finds, however, that the wizarding world is far more dangerous for him than he would have imagined, and he quickly learns that not all wizards are ones to be trusted. Written by Carly

One of the best movies for children every made from one of the best books for children ever written. I have been smitten with it all ever since it began.

The three children are superbly cast, with great chemistry which develops as they get to know each other better. The message of the book - that love overcomes everything, that integrity and honesty are the most important traits - comes through clearly, and I found myself gripped, almost as if I did

not know what was coming.

There are some scary moments towards the end, and a little minor bad language, so the rating for this film is PG in both the US and UK.
