This beautiful book includes poems and poemstarts on a variety of subjects. Each two-page spread includes three poems on a given subject (such as cows, rain, or friendship, for example) and instructions for writing your own poem on the same subject. Prelutsky also offers instructions for parents or

educators looking to facilitate the poem-writing process.

This book would work well for students sometimes afraid to write poetry or concerned that their poetry isn't "deep" or "serious" enough. Prelutsky explores the fun that writers can have with rhyme and encourages young writers to do the same.

The illustrations (in pencil and watercolor) are light, playful, and match the mood of the poems. The poems are, for the most part, by Jack Prelutsky, but other some other poets are included.

Highly recommended for elementary and middle school libraries.

This book is very helpful when teaching students how to write poetry because it allows them to read several poems, allows them to finish a poem that has already been started, and then gives you a topic to create your own

This is a great book to get childrens minds on rhyming words. There are many different poems that you can read and then it helps you write your own poem and gives your key rhyming words. This is a great book to make your students think creatively.

Jack Prelutsky gives examples of poems on a topic and then he does a "poemstart" to help kids to write one of their own. He gives suggestions and ideas for how to approach the poem. This would be a great book for students and teachers to use to get students to try writing poetry lines to finish his

poems. Then...hopefully, they will want to write some of their own without his help.

This is a great book full of poems and actually has activities for students to write their own poems! I think using this to introduce students to the different forms of poetry would be great, and it would also allow students to practice and read the different forms on their own.
