Description

Each of the exquisite twenty-three poems in this posthumous collection by Valerie Worth carefully distinguishes one animal from all other creatures and captures it in all of its wonderful singularity - from wasp to snake to wren. The way Worth perfectly illuminates the uniqueness of each animal in her precise and elegant free verse will delight both fans of her celebrated Small Poems and readers encountering her poetry for the first time. Breathtakingly rich cut-paper illustrations by Steve Jenkins provide a perfect counterpoint to Worth's spare style, and together poetry and picture bring every animal vividly to life.

A great visual book of animals to use in a poetry unit, or even to have kids try and make paper animals themselves!

This book is a collection of poetry about animals that children might come into contact with in various places. The illustrations are very cutely done in paper collage.

I like this book because the illustrations keep the attention of the children. The poems are a written a little above the 4 and 5

year old level, so the illustrations help them to understand what animal the poem is about.

I would use this book as a cross-curriculum book between science and art. I would read the book in an animal science lesson, then let the students do their own animal collages as the art portion.

The words used in these animal poems truely depict the animal. If you were to close your eyes and have someone read the poem to you, I think you could easily guess which animal is being described. I think that it would be for childlren above second grade, or maybe even third grade, because of the

complexity of some of the words used in the poems; however, it would provide a good introduction to poetry. Not all of the words rhyme and sometimes I think this is a new idea to children. Additonally, animals would be easy for children to write poems about.

Twenty-three poems, each about an animal – some common, others not so often written about – comprise this rather thought-provoking collection. Written in free verse, the poems are eloquent and vivid. Steve Jenkins' illustrations, made from a mixture of torn and precisely cut textured papers,

depict each creature as elegantly as Worty's words. I imagine having children close their eyes and listen to the poems while imagining what the animals look like. In “Wren,” the imagery is so vibrant that it almost doesn't require an illustration. Recommended Grade 3 – 8. Younger children will enjoy the illustrations and hearing the poems, whereas older tweens/teens will appreciate the depth and creativity of Worty's poems.

A good book to read to students. It is a poem book about different types of animals. Each page has an animal and it has a poem written about it.

This is a beautifully illustrated collection of poems about wild animals. The poems are not for the very young.

I really enjoyed this book. I thought that all of the poems were fantastic. All of the poems were written about a different type of animal. This would be a great book to read to student before doing a science lesson on that particular animal. I also like that the poems have a realness to them, but
Show More
still have that deep poetry flair that would get older students really discussing them.
