My kids know that I seldom question the books that they choose from their Scholastic Book Orders. They are reasonable about the amount that we spend, and I let them make their own choices. However, my fifth grader got a raised eyebrow when he asked to order I Survived the Bombing of Pearl Harbor,

1941. I like historical fiction, and so does he, but I wasn't sure that an engaging story about a disaster of this magnitude could be captured in a short chapter book. However, he read it as soon as it arrived and then put it on my TBR shelf in my bedroom. And so I picked it up . . . and had trouble putting it back down. The story is so engaging. Not only do you get the experience of being present at the bombing of Pearl Harbor, but the characters in the book are well-developed. They have backstories, and we both really cared what happened to them. It's not just the disaster that drives the story forward. My son learned a lot about Pearl Harbor, and the last 15 or so pages include more historical details and other resources. I will definitely be looking for Tarshis's other books, including I Survived the Shark Attacks of 1916 and I Survived Hurricane Katrina, 2005.

This book is probably one of the best books about the bombing of Pearl Harbor because it is exciting. It is about a boy that saves a bomber pilots life from driving and the boy lived to tell the tale.

The bombing of Pearl Harbor is something no American can forget. In a time of war there was an unexpected attack on the ships harbored at the bays of Hawaii. Danny was one of the many who witness and experience the horrific disaster. There was amazing detail in such a small book it is great for a

This story spans only a few days, but the intense action seems to make it last longer. This easy to understand story helps us understand what it might have felt like to be in Pearl Harbor during the Japanese bombing. I felt like I learned a lot in such a short story. I learned even more from the

snippets of historical facts at the end of the book. What was presented, made me want to search more information about this horrific event.

The I survived series is a great collection of historical fiction to introduce to multiple grades. This particular book would be good to share with any student interested in Pearl Harbor or World War II. It would also be a good resource for a sixth grade student who struggles with reading for our World War II research project - for the short facts in the back of the book.

This is the sadist book I ever read. If this was book a movie it would be good. Someone pushed Sammy (main character) of a three story fire escape! Who was it?

Yet another "they all lived happily ever after" volume of I Survived. One of these days I'd love for Tarshis to acknowledge that PEOPLE DIE. Not the main character of course, but secondary characters.

This was my first I Survived book. I can see why they are so popular with some of the students, especially reluctant readers. It was short and action packed. Danny and his mom moved to Hawaii and had been there about 3 weeks. He's contemplating making a run for it to go back to New York to check on

his best friend who is hospitalized. A run on in with a local neighborhood boy whose family is Japanese puts a spin on the action of the book. Author's notes and a timeline at the end of the book offer additional historical perspective.
