Summary:
In this story Young Wolf is old enough to choose a horse of his own. He picks a mare mamed Red Wind. The other boys in the village make fun of him because warriors don't ride mares. Young Wolf didn't care, he trained Red Wind to be a war horse. One night Red Wind heard someone trying to

steel the horses. Young Wolf and Red Wind rode through the village waking up the warriors and chased the Apaches away. Young Wolf and his mare had saved the horses.

Personal Reaction:
This is a great story about bullying. The boy being bullied ends up saving the day. It would also be great for anyone who likes horses.

Classroom Extension Ideas:
1. This book could be used to introduce American Indian cultures to students.
2. I would use this book to lead into a discussion about bullying.
