I started reading this this evening and finished. Major Nom-Nom. The hero, while being gorgeous, sensitive, rude and broody is also deeply
I wasn't initially convinced on him, although the "meet-cute" that wasn't really had me liking Elliot's voice. But it was his lack of smooth lines that kept him endearing and consistent through the book. I really loved Elliot by the end, and really loved the creativity and the flower talk.
Ama was a commitment-phobic list-maker and wedding planner workaholic. She was charming and a bit of a hurricane in a broken down car. I liked but found her less grounded in ways and less fresh. That said, I did enjoy seeing them being everything they needed and the way they fell in step was fun to read.
While this flashback (Elliot)-present (Ama) narrative choice is tough for me - where what happened to them is a mystery- this was executed in a manner that made it feel fair and obvious once you see how the characters are, and frankly moving enough.
I was impressed with Soto's ability to write tension of all kinds-plot,personal, relationship, sexual. It helped make this book feel engaging throughout. I am looking forward to her follow-up. Four stars because I would definitely revisit, but didn't quite reach the heights of a 5. Parts of it came close, however. (I think Elliot's relationship to his mother & father was well established, but they both needed more relationships in the book to help flesh out the characters for me; Ama was much closer.)
I also found the brief conflict in the final act frustrating and kind of silly / meaningless. I would've rather those pages be spent on the couple. Still, 4-I just really enjoyed it!
Within the pages of Forget Me Not, we meet two characters with some unlikable qualities that somehow make them even more likable. The first half of the book alternates chapters told from the pov of each character, however, the chapters from Ama's perspective are in the present, while the chapters from Elliot's perspective are from the past and detail what happened to cause the couple to separate. The suspense builds as we learn more about what went wrong in their relationship and the depth of fear and longing that still persists between the two of them. The backdrop of the wedding they are planning adds some humor as we learn more about the talents of each protagonist, but after the reason for their separation is revealed, there is bit of a disconnect to the story. Overall though, Forget Me Not is an enjoyable read that is tough to put down.
