A characteristically thoughtful collection of essays, taking as their jumping off point sections of the Divine Comedy. Although tied together with this theme, the chapters are independent ruminations and thus can be read in any order.

(the best part of each section), followed by free-ranging discourse on the chapter's primary theme: language, reasoning, identity, etc. Interesting, as is all Manguel's work, but it would have been better had it built cumulatively to a single point, instead of being a potpourri of tidbits and insights.
