The moderately well-to-do Frontenac family run a timber business near Bordeaux. Widowed Blanche and her five children; and brother-in-law Xavier- who has a well-concealed life of his own, co-habiting with a worthy but lower-clas woman, whom he feels duty-bound to hide.

sense of childhood in his beloved Landes. The impact of others on us; so that deaths which appear to have little effect at the time, may - months or years down the line- cause heart-rending memories to surface...
The 'mystery' might be better rendered 'mystique' or 'character'.
A book I felt I should probably read a second time to really get the whole message.
