Post-apocalyptic adventure! Hiero, the warrior-priest of the Kandan Universal Church continues his fight against the Unclean in the second book of this fantasy series. Having once more escaped his enemies, this time with his mental communication skills compromised, Hiero is making his solitary way

Written in 1983, this book captures the flavor of golden age science fiction of the very well-written, very well-imagined sort. The story cries out for a sequel!

The continuation of the Hiero 2 volume series. This gets a bit stranger than the first, but still continues the well written tale of a man trying to survive and improve his world after the fall of civilization.

I loved the first Hiero book (Hiero's Journey), so I bought this in hardcover, but I was very disappointed. I like my heroes to be heroic, but in this one, Hiero, who was truly heroic in in the first book, is deprived of his mental powers and left wandering a desert. As the title implies, he does

have faithful friends who help him, but it is till frustrating. Also, as in some other sequels, the beginning feels it necessary to undo the prospective happy ending of the first book, which I also dislike.
