Description

Fantasy. Fiction. Suspense. Thriller. HTML: Weather Warden Joanne Baldwin has protected the human race from monster storms, been killed, reborn as a Djinn, and then restored to her original form. Now she's throwing the dice to stop an infinitely powerful, deeply disturbed kid-who is holed up in a Vegas hotel-from bringing on a new ice age..

Media reviews

In a subgenre that shows signs of getting stale, Caine has created a convincing and intensely compelling contemporary fantasy, with a kick-butt heroine who will appeal strongly to fans of Tanya Huff, Kelley Armstrong and Charlaine Harris.

Joanne Baldwin is in trouble up to her eyeballs. Her best friend is dying because a young punk of a kid has stolen his power and is using it to wreck havok on the delicate balance of the planet's ecosystem.

Despite given orders to the contrary, Joanne feels that she's the only person qualified to
Show More
diffuse this powder keg. However, she soons finds out that she doesn't have a clue about what's been going on. How does she survive a fight for survival when she's not even sure who the enemy is?

Rachel Caine has a vivid imagination, often throwing her main character to the wolves and just watching to see how she gets out of her mess. But, often times, this book has a lot of glitches that could bring the reader out of the story, especially if they're not invested in the characters enough to want to read on just to find out who lives through this mess.

This is a good, fun read if you don't care about the mechanics of storytelling and are more forgiving when it comes to the overuse of certain words and phrases. This was a fun little action-packed book, but it doesn't hold a candle to the literary masterpieces of the past.

This series keeps getting better & better, but it's definitely one that MUST be read in order. Just as book 2 picked up where book 1 left off, this 3rd book picks up where book 2 left off, and Joanne has to deal with events from that book. She also learns about the nature of love, along with
Show More
battling the forces of nature and driving fast cars. There are some shocking developments that I can't wait to see dealt with in book 4, which, fortunately, is waiting in my TBR pile.

The third book in the series and you'd nearly need to re-read the previous two. Joanne is trying to get Kevin to stop what he's doing but she has to get around the wardens and another group who have appeared out of the woodwork. She wants to keep alive but doesn't know how to do it and keep other
Show More
people alive too.

She gets hard, really hard. It's still light reading, but fun.

Joanne feels a little responsible about the fact that teen insanity candidate, Kevin, is now the master of the most powerful dijin in the world. So, despite protestations from her boss to her boyfriend telling her not to Joanne is determined to go to Las Vegas to try and rectify the problem.

Unfortunately things just seem to get worse as time goes on.

Once again another Weather Warden book is responsible for what is becoming a serious lack of sleep and concentration. I'm still loving the story but am feeling a little exhausted both on this level and from reading about Joanne's constant jumps from the frying pan into the fire. I'm beginning to think Joanne and David may never catch a break.

Better than Ill Wind but still the first book is by far the best in the series.

Still throughly enjoying this book. It appears that the whole continueing to be growing on our wonderful group of characters that all appear in Caine's stories. I am awaiting the next book, so I can see what lies in the future for all of the characters. Will it ever get easier on David, and will
Show More
they be able to keep their relationship.

These "Weather Warden" stories just keep better and better! This picks right up where the second book left off. David and Joanne are heading to Las Vegas to try to catch Kevin, the off balance young man who now holds the world's strongest (and not the nicest) Djinn in his possession. Unfortunately,
Show More
the master/servant relationship quickly gets turned around and the mixture of Kev's out of control power and the Djinn's are creating havoc. Polar caps are melting, earthquakes are beginning...disaster looms. The Weather Wardens jump to remove Joanne from her going in after Kevin and Jonathan (who I can't seem to get a feel on...is he as bad as he seems?) Then a dying Lewis shows up and twists things all around. After "Chill Factor" I'm not sure if I trust him either. The story is non stop excitement. There is just the right amount of humor in Joanne's adventures to keep the book from being too intense. I thought the first story was a little slow, but that certainly hasn't been a problem in the second and third books. I encourage anyone to try this series. Its different than anything else out there and Rachel Caine stands above and beyond most other writers. See her "Morganville Vampires" young adult series for another great tale.

After finding myself a bit disappointed by the second book, the author had grabbed me once again for the third. Poor Joanne gets tossed around a lot without knowing what's going on, but sometimes, somehow, she manages to plant her feet and make a stand. I still think I might like a story set in
Show More
this worth but not following Joanne better -- I'd love to see the life of an ordinary weather mage rather than one who's the centre of a bigger power play -- but I'm still looking forwards to the next book.

Chill Factor follows Joanne Baldwin, Weather Warden, as she attempt to fix the mess created at the end of Heat Stroke. Kevin, an angry teenager with a lot of power, has control of the most powerful Djinn and is keeping all the Wardens out of Las Vegas. The Djinn have been disappearing and the
Show More
Wardens cannot combat the unusual weather changes without them. Joanne, who is now human again, has been sent in to try to get Jonathan away from Kevin and restore order before the world is destroyed.

As in the previous books, Joanne doesn't fully understand the situation she is placed in. She is being used by others who either have more power than she does or at least think they do. Although Lewis is weakened because Kevin stole his powers, he still feels that he has the moral high ground and can use Joanne to his own ends. The Wardens also feel that they know how the world should be and that their control over the elements is saving humans from nature instead of destroying a delicate balance.

The events of this book also tie into events from Joanne's past. This leads to sections of the book featuring her memories. The majority of the time, I was able to keep straight what was in the past and what was currently happening, although there were a couple of times when I did get confused. The addition of past events solidifies Joanne's connection to current events and gives a reason why Joanne must be the one to diffuse this situation rather than one of the other Wardens.

Joanne is feisty, impulsive, stubborn, and determined. Despite the risks to her own life, she knows she cannot walk away from the situation and leave the world in peril.

I continue to enjoy this series, although I would not say it is one of my favorites. I am certainly understanding more of Joanne's character as the books progress and am beginning to like her a bit more than I did in the first book.

Supernatural romance-ish in which hotrod loving Joanne and her weather working powers end up in the middle of a war between the Wardens, the Djinn and the Earth herself. Not startlingly good but hypnotic in that way attractive emotional writing can be.

Series is getting better

Chill Factor is the third, highly entertaining installment in the Weather Warden series. Just like the first two books, this one had me hooked from the start. It’s fast paced and filled with action. I could barely put it down! That said, I don’t think Chill Factor is quite as strong as the
Show More
first two books. Joanne is basically helpless for almost the entire story, always getting manhandled or manipulated by the people around her. It’s frustrating to watch her run out of choices and not be able to do anything even when she knows that she’s a pawn in someone else’s game. At one point, there’s even a brutal act of violence committed against her that seems completely unnecessary and wrong for the story. It irked me that such a strong female character like Joanne is so powerless for most of the book.

Though Joanne remains just as stubborn and feisty as usual, there’s a lot of changes happening with the other characters. Some of these changes are good; for example, Joanne gains a new ally who’s totally badass. But some of the character developments just made me angry or confused. I wanted to strangle Lewis and Paul, and David does something extremely douchey to Joanne in the name of love. Not to mention, both Kevin and Jonathan behave in really confusing ways. One minute they’re helping Joanne, the next they’re trying to kill her, and back and forth until you don’t know what they’re thinking. I’d rather read about multifaceted, dynamic characters than paper-thin ones, but, still, some of the character development in this book is not understandable or satisfying.

But despite my criticisms, I did enjoy Chill Factor. It retains the fantastic worldbuilding and fun combination of drama, action, comedy, and romance that first drew me in to the series. The plot is full of twists and turns, and even though Joanne is a little slow on the uptake (again), the revelation of the villain’s identity managed to surprise me. Several plot threads are left hanging in the end, setting up major conflicts for future installments and making me eager to pick up book four. Overall, Chill Factor is not as good as the first two books, but it’s still a decent read and part of an awesome urban fantasy series.

Must. Not. Read. Before. Bed.

There wasn't any place to set this book down. It was one adventure, threat to life as we know it or witty interaction after another. A definite page turner - all the way to the end (at 4 a.m.!).

It has not been a great week for Weather Warden, Joanne Baldwin. First she died, then she became a djinn, then she died (again) and now finds herself being back in a mortal body. Being mortal sucks, when you've had the power of the djinn at your hands. Meanwhile, teenage psychopath Kevin
Show More
has skipped to Vegas, taking with him the strongest djinn in the world. But who is the master and who is the slave? And what's going on in the Luxor?

Joanne Baldwin has to save the world (again) and to do this, she might just have to die. Again.

These books are like a whirlwind ride, the pace never ceases just releases for a short time. There's a lot of action, a little shopping, a lot of back-talk (Joanne is a mouthy lass), and not as much romance and mushy-love stuff as I would have expected for the genre. This puts her more on par with Kim Harrison then, say, Nalini Singh. Despite him being a relatively minor player in this book, the relationship between David and Joanne is sweet and you kind of wish the two of them would get some kind of break.

I had to buy this one on my kindle, as I could not wait for an order to arrive from afar and none of the libraries had it. I've now acquired 4,5 and 6 - which I thought were the remainder of the series. They're not. There are 9 books in total (at least the 9th is the final!) and thus I am hoping I can get the rest in the same manner.

This one has far more sensible chapter divisions. There are at least six or seven chapters in this book, a welcome relief after the three that made up "Heat Stroke".

Great entry into this series.....Joanne is no longer a Djinn, but Caine somehow put her through the ringer in this book and she still seemed almost as powerful as before. This is one of the more imaginative series I've encountered recently.

Loved it, Kevin the terrible teen takes the wardens to vegas where he causes all kinds of dumb mistakes and Jo has to help solve them. I just love this story, all the characters are interesting and fun to follow.
