shaken when an anonymous note leads him and his colleagues to the discovery of another body that bears all the signature details of the Dollmaker — but this murder was committed after the serial killer's death at Harry's hands. Did Harry shoot the wrong guy four years ago? Is there a copycat killer at work?

This is the third and by far the best entry in this series so far. When the series began in [The Black Echo], Harry had been demoted within LAPD and his interactions with his superior officers were tense and hostile. This book goes back and fills in the blanks of how that happened, since the Dollmaker case is the one that caused Harry's downfall within the department. The relationships between Harry and his colleagues, as well as the personal relationship he began in the last book, all show signs of development that make everyone less like one-dimensional caricatures of "good cop/bad cop/femme fatale". A satisfying whodunit wedded to what's become an interesting group of characters and sense of place makes this a recommended read.
