Character: George Washington
Setting: Virginia 1732
Theme: Historical, informative. Informational.
Genre: Historical non-fiction
Summary: This book explores what it would have been like to grow up in the 1700’s. The book asks a series of questions about everyday life in early colonial history. The
Show More
book aims to answer those questions all while including facts about George Washington. The book provides a superficial overview of the significant events for a child growing up on a newly settled colony. It starts with a brief autobiography of George Washington and answers questions that a child would have faced if they had to settle in a new colony.
Audience: Youth
Curriculum: History and developing analysis skills
Personal Response: This book is good for providing basic information about George Washington. The illustrations really do a good job of making the subject matter light instead of intense. Instead of avoiding strong subject matters like slavery the book glosses over serious issues and keeps it fact based. This is a good technique because it exposes children to topics that can be expanded upon in the future.
