This is a biography of Christopher Columbus, focusing on his journey to find the West Indies but really discovering the Americas. It contains positive and informative information about Columbus and the boats that he took on his journey. This is a primary level reading book, for students who are
Show More
just starting to learn how to read. Columbus was a round and dynamic character in this book, he discovered many new things and even became afraid on his journey. The reader learns many new things about how he was as a leader, and the courage he has.

I found the book to be an easy read I couldn't put it down. I found it very informitive and fun to read. The book was easier to read because of the way it was written. I would use this book in my classroom to help get my students more interested in history.

This is the story of how Columbus sailed from Spain and discovered what he believed to be the Far East. It uses small sentences and simple words to describe the passage over the ocean, the discovery of some islands, and the native people who lived there.
As far as biographies goes, this is the best
Show More
one ever. If real life were as simple and easy as it seems in this book that would be great. I just love how simplified this book is. I think it's dumb how children have to wait until much later in life to learn what REALLY happened when Columbus came to the Americas. I remember growing up thinking he was a hero. Now I have mixed feelings towards him.
I would read this book on Columbus Day, and then the children could do typical Columbus Day activities.

I really enjoyed this book and I think it is a great book to read to the students to get a better understanding of Christopher Columbus. It goes through some challenges and the journey he went through to his trip to the new world.

Christopher Columbus was a famous navigator and mapmaker. He wanted to make Spain rich and help the King and Queen. He thought he knew a quicker way to go from Spain to the Far East. He made three ships and the King and Queen payed for the voyage. He thought he had reached the Indies, so he named

the people Indians. Christopher never knew he didn't make it to the Far East. He did not know he had just discovered America.

This book is a great book that explains who Christopher Columbus was. It gives a very accurate account of how Christopher Columbus discovered America, in a way for young readers to understand.

I would use this book in a unit over Christopher Columbus, and to talk about Indians.

This nonfiction books is a biography about Christopher Columbus. It tells his story of his journey to find the Indies, but ends up in what is now called America and does not know it.
I liked this book because it is very informative and gives good details about Columbus's journey.
Some extension
Show More
ideas for the classroom could be to have students created a timeline of Columbus's life as told in the book or to have a unit on famous explorers such as Columbus, Lewis and Clark, and La Salle.

Summary:
This is a great book for children about Columbus's voyage. I think the colorful illustrations would keep children entertained. Also, the story is simply and interestingly written and easy to follow.

Personal Reaction:
This was a neat history book to read. I especially like some of the details
Show More
from the book like the new foods that were taken back to Spain. I also liked the cut away picture of the ship.

Classroom Extension Ideas:
1. For a creative writing assignment I would have students make a list of what 5 items they would take with them if they were going on Christopher Columbus journey.

2. For a history assignment, I would have students write down 8 facts from the book that they were surprised to learn. I would also have them write down what they already knew before we read the book.

This is a simple account of Christopher Columbus and his voyage to America. The reader will explore the mysteries of the New World and travel along with Christopher Columbus in his adventures. This book is an excellent reading tool for building children's reading skills. It has large illustrations

and has a basic writing style. Students can complete a Mini Booklet that tells the story of Columbus one line at a time on each page, while the students illustrate the words.

Although it has a very western conquering civilization point of view, this book is good because it shows the struggles and adventure that Columbus and his sailors went through. The illustrations show the characters emotions as well as detailed images of the voyage. There is opportunity for the
Show More
teacher to insert the reality of the early explorers' exploitation and arrogant attitudes into the gaps we tend to leave in our historical accounts.
