This is a really good book about the five senses. There is a little boy in the book going through all the senses. Sometimes he uses only one sense other times he uses more than one sense, and sometimes he uses all five senses at once. But by using his senses this makes him aware.

Classroom

Extension: I would take the kids on a walk to the park and we would talk about all the senses that we used and how we used them when we got back to class.
Classroom Extension: I would have different boxes with different things in them i would have the kids touch, smell, listen, taste if probable and look at all the things in the boxes.

I love the simplicity of Aliki's books, and "Five Senses" is no exception. This classic text clearly, playfully explains the concepts of seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and touching, and encourages questions and playful explorations. I read this book to my PK scientists at the beginning and end

of our five senses unit, and they enjoyed it in different ways each time. Aliki is truly the master of creating a text that engages emergent readers where they are; there is no patronizing language or overly explained ideas. His language and illustrations capture the essence of childhood and encourage curious minds to learn more.

“My Five Senses” is an informational book written by Aliki for preschoolers and kindergarteners. This book written in concept style begins with a page that appears to be a picture graph of all five senses. Under the title of each sense is a picture of an item that would be experienced with that
Show More
particular sense. The book continues with every two pages opening up to state the sense on the left side and a picture of a boy showing the object of that sense, such as his ears or eyes, on the right side. The second half of the book gives examples of different events a preschooler could relate to with the senses that would be used to experience the event.

This book is an excellent introduction of the five senses to young children. The illustrations are a painterly media with the use of colored pencils in warm pastel shades making it visually appealing. The drawings of the boy in each picture are very simple allowing the focus to be on the child’s sense that is being described. The author, Aliki, has written more than sixty fiction and nonfiction books for children. These books include “My Hands”, “My Feet”, and “I’m Growing.” I would highly recommend the use of this book to introduce the five senses of the human body.

In the classroom the book could be used to support a science lesson on the five senses. Each child could be given play dough or clay and asked to make a model of one of their body parts that provides one of the five senses. Once they are finished they could have a show and tell describing their model and what sense it is used to experience. The book could also be used by a teacher to introduce to students the five senses at the beginning of a science lesson about their bodies. As they study about their teeth, eyes, hands, and other parts of the body they can refer back to this book to discover what those body parts do. The book is an excellent companion book to other texts for preschoolers about the human body and what it does.

This book is easy to read and teaches children about the five senses. It would be a great lead up to a science lesson that deals with the five senses. It helps children understand why they feel, see, taste, touch, and hear things. You can also teach children what it would be like to not have one of

the five senses, such as eyesight. There are several activities that will correspond with this story.

My Five Senses engages the reader by teaching about the five senses from the perspective of a child. The repetitiveness of the book makes reading exciting for the students to feel familiar with.

Common Core Exemplar Text, Non-Fiction, Concept Book, Picture Book; I liked this book more than I thought I would. What I liked the most is that it went more in depth than just saying there are five senses (sight, smell, touch, taste, sound). The author talked about how more that one sense is used

at a time and had the little boy in the book turn counting his senses being used into a game. Children typically love any time of game so this should really help ignite excitement in the targeted audience to learn about senses. The main point of this text is to inform its audience about the five senses. It could be used to teach or to enhance a lesson.

Aliki explains what senses are and how often we use them in this beautifully-illustrated book for young readers who are curious about the way that we see, smell, hear, touch, and taste the world.

With simple words and not much of a story, Aliki goes through all five senses and shows which senses we
Show More
use in our daily lives. She explains which organs we use for each sense. And she also explains what each sense can do by showing objects associated with each sense, such as cookies baking in the oven for the sense of smell.

Although Aliki's illustrations are wonderful, the simplicity of the text sometimes does not do enough to explain the complexity of the senses. A statement such as "When I see the sun or a frog or my baby sister, I use my sense of sight. I am seeing" would need the explanation of an adult in order to be illuminating for a child.

Besides this one criticism, this book succeeds in introducing children to the world of sensory experiences. Coupled with an adult's explanations, it's a great way to explain the five senses.
