This was always one of my favorite stories to read or be read to as a child. One of my favorite aspects of this book is the extra-textual feature. For example, on some pages some of the illustrations are labeled so the reader knows what they are when reading the text. The Coliseum, Spanish steps,

and pantheon are a few of the pictures that are labeled. In addition, every few pages there are letters from Felix that the reader can actually pull out of an envelope and read. I really like these parts of the book because I really felt like I was reading actual letters from Felix; it really helps the readers immerse themselves in the book. Another thing I liked about this book are the end pages. The show a map of all of the places Felix visits on his world tour. The reader is able to see where he is visiting in a simplistic comparison to where his home is. After reading the story the reader could look at the end pages and recall what Felix did in each of the places he visited. Finally, I liked the variety of writing style within the book. The majority of the book was written like a typical story. But then the reader got to read the “letters” Felix wrote. I think this added to the uniqueness of the book. In addition, in the letter from France Felix also included a picture of himself holding a baguette in front of the Eiffel Tower. This gave the reader a more relatable point of view for what was being observed in each city he visited. I think the big idea/message of this story is to go out and experience or learn about the world and the different cultures.

This is a great way for children to learn geography and letter writing as they follow Felix on his adventures.

Local notes

Sophie's cuddly rabbit, Felix, disappears in the airport at the end of her vacation. This is very, very bad, because Sophie and Felix are inseparable. But when school starts again, suddenly a letter for Sophie arrives from London--a letter from Felix.
