The first book in Robert Asprin's MythAdventures series, Another Fine Myth introduces us to an apprentice wizard Skeeve and his frustrated mentor, Garkin. Skeeve is only half-heartedly studying his lessons as his real desire is to be a thief. Everything changes when Garkin is assassinated while
Show More
summoning a demon. Now Skeeve and the purple-tongued demon Aahz the Perv must track down Garkin's killer.

Despite the grim sounding synopsis above, Another Fine Myth is a very light-hearted and funny fantasy story that never takes itself too seriously. Filled with narrow escapes, plenty of magic and encounters with strange and interesting characters, Skeeve and Aahz tend to escape using their wits and magic rather than brute force.

I very much enjoyed this first entry to the series. Robert Asprin spins a terrific yarn filled with humor. The universe he has created for this story is interesting. Similar enough to other fantasy stories that it is familiar, but unique enough that you don't feel like you are reading a parody of Tolkien. This is a funny book, but the humor is situational rather than slapstick and obvious. The jokes never seem forced; rather they arise organically from the story.

I very much enjoyed this first MythAdventure and am planning to read the rest of the series.

Fun to read. Asprin is a master of the pun.

Oh this was so much fun! These books had been recommended to me years ago and have been languishing away on my TBR list since then, when I saw on audible that they were finally available on audio I jumped at the chance to give them a try, and now have another series to listen to 18 books I could go
Show More
broke but this one was so much fun I must listen to more!

I loved all the characters in this book, I appreciated that the author let readers get to know them as they got to know each other it was a great bonding experience with the characters. I enjoyed the humor and frivolity and also the great story.

Skeeve is a magician’s apprentice, when his master is killed he ends up being an apprentice to a demon named Aahz as they bounce between dimensions to try to get Aahz back to his own dimension and restore his magical abilities and get revenge for Skeeve’s masters death. Along the way they meet so many great characters. I really liked that the author tells this story through dialogue we still get plenty of world building but it isn’t in overly done descriptions it is in the different characters explaining things to each other. I loved the ending, I don’t want to spoil it but the way they get one over on Issivan at the end is sooo great and not what I expected.

Noah Michael Levine was a new to me narrator and he was wonderful for this book I would definitely listen to him again…in fact I will listen to him again because I plan on listening to this whole series! But I would listen to him narrate other books too. He has a great range of voices, inflections and accents even though one character does sound like Sean Connery I didn’t care this narrator is the perfect fit for this book!

I will be listening to more of this series this is a short audiobook but well worth the credit I spent on it. If you are a fan of Pratchett and Adams I think you will enjoy this series too!

Thoroughly enjoyable, tongue in cheek fantasy tale.

An excellent light-hearted fantasy romp. I read this back in '84 and the book has stuck with me ever since. What's nice is, I enjoyed it as much as an adult as I did as a kid. Asprin does a great job of introducing the reader to his characters and the world he is building. It's funny, fast reading
Show More
that any age can enjoy. This book helped foster my love of reading.

Sadly, Mr. Asprin passed away in 2008. I can honestly say that I've enjoyed every one of his books that I've read.

My Internet Book Database of Fiction (www.ibdof.com) review:

I read quite a few of the books in this series several years ago. I remembered enjoying it then, so I thought I'd give it a re-read now and see if the magik was still there. Indeed it is! Another Fine Myth is a highly entertaining light
Show More
read that I couldn't put down.

The story revolves around the adventures of a young magician's apprentice, Skeeve. Skeeve is a likable character, if a bit naive and the misadventures that he gets into with his friends are a magical romp through a universe of magik, demons, dragons and all sorts of other fantastical creatures. Because Asprin has incorporated different levels of technology in each dimension, there are really no limits on what might appear to challenge or aid our heroes. It's a lot of fun and always keeps you guessing as to what will happen next.

Also, at only 200 pages, this book makes for a nice, quick break from other more weighty readings. I hope that I'm right in remembering that the rest of the series continues to be this enjoyable and I look forward to joining Skeeve and the gang again very soon.

Enjoyable. I think that my favorite character in the whole book was Aahz just for his smarmy know-it-all-ness. Wholly readable and entertaining.

Robert Asprin's Another Fine Myth. It was cute, but I wasn't exactly overwhelmed by it. It's a rather short book. I'm sure a lot of the dialog exchanges were meant to be humorous, but for me a lot of times they fell flat. The author seemed enamored of several of his exchanges, and kept repeating
Show More
them past the point of being amusing.

The story revolves around Skeeve. He is the apprentice to a sorcerer. In the middle of one of their lessons his mentor is assassinated leaving Skeeve alone with the demon Aahz. Aahz and Skeeve must figure a way to defeat the sorcerer that sent the assassin before Skeeve becomes the next target. The banter between Skeeve and Aahz became painful at times. The ignorance of Skeeve and the sarcastic manner of Aahz, I'm sure was supposed to be humorous. For me, a little would have been humorous, but too much and it just began to drag. The world building was fine, and fairly well realized. I might try another in the series, perhaps things will improve. It's not going to go to the top of my TBR pile though.

light, tasty, engaging fantasy. many giggles in store. enjoyable tripe, perfect for an afternoon amusement. first in a series, this is one of the better efforts. worth reading the others, this is still the best of the lot.

This is a very enjoyable book for those who enjoy stories about friendship, a little magic, and witty references to other great works. This story about a budding magician who really wants to be a thief is a lot of fun and takes you in new directions you never expected. The main character, Skeeve,
Show More
is someone you begin to care about and drives you forward wondering what will come next. The supporting cast is hilarious and will keep you engaged throughout the book. It is a very short read and is well worth your time if you are looking for something lighthearted and need something to pass the time.

I mooched this book because I read the book when I was still in high school. Methinks that I should of just let nostalgia lie. The book is way to short, the puns horrible, and the book isn't very humorus.

Skeeve is being trained as a magician when his master decides to dazzle him by conjuring a demon. Unfortunately, his master is killed right after the demon arrives. Fortunately, demon is short for “dimension traveler” and the huge, green, scaly guy with all the sharp teeth is friendly. The
Show More
entire M.Y.T.H. series, of which this is the first title, showcases Asprin’s Monty Python-esque humor.

I was a teenager when I first read this series and I absolutely loved these books then. I enjoyed most any book that took an ordinary, fairly incompetent lead character and allowed him to have an adventure, learn magic, get the girl, etc. (The Myth series, Craig Shaw Gardener's trilogies, John
Show More
DeChancie's Castle Perilous series, and so on.) Hmmm, I wonder why I gravitated toward that kind of book... Anyway, about 20 years later, I figured I would try the series again, especially since there are five or ten more books in the series now than the last time I read it. How did the first book hold up? It was still fun, and the explanations of how magic works and what demons are (anyone from another dimension) are clever. The fake, and ironic, quotes at the beginning of each chapter are wryly funny and make more sense to me now. Maybe it is impossible to judge this book without the lens of nostalgia distorting it, but I found it to be a fast, fun read and it was nice to hang out with Aahz, Skeeve, Tanda, Gleep and the rest of the gang again.

Loved rereading this - it's been such a long time that I could only remember vague bits of the story. Looking forward to reading the rest. =)

Nice and quick read.

More 'adult' than I remembered. ;-)

Liked the 'quotes' at the beginning of each chapter. I think some of them were lost on me the last time
Show More
I read it.

I think I'd quite like a Gleep... ;-)

Unfotunately, I find a lot of humour books to be not very funny.

I am not a fan of Fantasy. I have only read a few and found I just couldn't get into the story.

This book was so different. Right from the very beginning until the last word. It slowly took me through the adventure, step by step. Throughout the book, I found myself smiling and giggling to myself. I
Show More
couldn't wait until I picked it up again.

I look forward to reading the rest of the Myth series.

I wish that this was the Trade paperback, and most of my collection of this series is from Starblaze, but this one, sadly, is not. I still love it, and treasure it, and am about to read them all over again.

A nice romp through a set of devastating puns. An apprentice mage finds his education severely set back by the death of his mentor, and an effective death threat to himself. Fortunately, the raw materials of his training are very helpful.

As a culture, we are always looking for the next best thing. Computers, cars, you name it. And, of course, books. Everything from urban fantasy to suspense, young adult to horror. Sometimes, though, what is New isn’t what we really need. Instead, what is Old is new again, or rather, it should

be!

I just listened to Another Fine Myth by Robert Asprin, and narrated by Noah Michael Levine. First printed in 1978, I found the series way back then, and have the whole collection in paper. Recently, however, the books have come out on Audible.com and, of course, I have to buy them all again. How can I help it? Noah Michael Levine does an amazing job of narrating! His voice and cadence are absolutely perfect for the reading. His grasp of accents is amazing, and he really brings the characters to life. I spent all night last night in my workroom, working on holiday gifts, and though I got really tired about 4AM, I couldn’t tear myself away. There is a sample reading on Audible, check it out and you will love it too!

Why SHOULDN’T Robert Lynn Asprin’s Skeeve be the next Harry Potter?! It’s all there. Witches, Demons, and Wizards, Oh, My! And the Myth series is FUNNY. Like, burst out laughing on the airplane funny. And the voices by Noah take the laugh-out-loud character to a whole new level of laughter. Though Robert is now gone from us, his collaboration with Jody Lynn Nye means that the wonder of the tale lives on, and it is well worth the journey of discovery!

Skeeve, the main character of the series, is an apprentice wizard. He doesn’t really care all that much about being an apprentice wizard, of course. He was previously a thief, who got busted by the Wizard he was trying to rob. Instead of turning him into a frog, or something just as icky, the Wizard makes Skeeve an apprentice wizard. What are ya gonna do?

During the summoning of the Demon Aahz, an Assassin comes to call – and that is when things get rather messy. When the Wizard is killed, Skeeve is stuck now with the Demon Aahz, summoned from his own world, and none too happy about it. What follows? Well, you will just have to read the book to find out! Or rather, I would actually listen to it. You will NOT be disappointed if you like funny, well paced, creative and wonderful story lines.

Enjoy!!!! Highly Recommended

Before the brilliant humor and fantasy of the Discworld series there were Myth Adventures. It is chock full of snark and sarcasm of which Aahz knows how to lay the smack down.
LibraryThing member grandpahobo
This is an extremely entertaining and fast paced book. The story jumps from one adventure to another without any fluff or letdown. The writing is witty. I can't wait to read the next one.

I've enjoyed all the Myth books I have had the pleasure of reading, to this point. A naïve sorcerers apprentice, in a backwater dimension, a demon, and loads of myth adventures. This is simply a fun and engaging read. Pick up a copy, you won't put it down and will want more.

A quick fun fantasy read.

I enjoyed this, it's a quick, light hearted easy read.
