the three main characters are blatant archetypes in both appearance and personality. Some of the chapters also suffer from the "mystery" syndrome, where one of the main characters figures something out and acts on it with the reader having no possible way to figure it out until they are told later when the character explains it to his companions. Also, this is only the first book in a large series, so things will surely be developed more in the future. Readers seeking an exciting survival challenge with bits of comedy and willing to put up with the shallow characters could do much worse than Hunter X Hunter.

Local notes

Hunters are a special breed, dedicated to tracking down treasures, magical beasts, and even other people. But such pursuits require a license, and less than 1 in 100,000 can pass the grueling qualification exam. Those who do pass gain access to restricted areas, amazing stores of information, and the right to call themselves Hunters.
